valves are set cold at .012" inch, every 9,000 miles according to my handbook
1. Run the engine until warm.
2. Remove valve cover.
3. Tighten the head bolts. (80-85 ft.lb)
i only do this every 100,000 miles...
4. Set the piston of No.1 cylinder to top dead center(compression)
and check/adjust valve clearance as needed on this cylinder/valve
combination only: Intake only on No.1 and No.2 cylinders, Exhaust
only on No.1 and No.3 cylinders.
5. Turn the crankshaft once (360 degrees), bringing No.4 piston to TDC on the compression stroke, and adjust the following valves: Intake only on No.3 and No.4 cylinders, Exhaust only on No.2 and No.4 cylinders.
Clearance on all valves is 0.012 in.
6. if the valve cover vent mod hasn't been performed, do it now. while the cover is off. (see below)
Valve cover vent mod
reduces oil leaks due to blow-by pressure.
1. remove valve cover
2. remove the vent hardware on the underside.
3. cut and drill out the vent tube.
4. drill the hole for a 3/8 pipe thread.
5. carefully thread the hole.
6. install a short 3/8 pipe fitting. (long enough to clamp on a 5/8 hose).
7. use thread sealer to ensure a leak proof fit. (some people like jb weld)
8. get your polishing equipment out and make the cover shine... (clean and clear coat the cover).
9. replace all the vent gear on underside of valve cover.
10. get a new section of heater hose to fit between intake flex hose and the valve cover's new fitting.
11. replace the cover seal
12. install the valve cover.
*. enjoy the lack of oil getting all over the engine. (my main seal stopped leaking as well).
