I have an 86 Ranger 2.9L two fuel tanks. I took it in to be smogged, nothing wrong in the engine, but the tech said the Check engine light was not coming on and going out. I have never had this problem before, I am the original owner, I told him I would have to check the bulb, But do not think it has ever come on. As I left, he said something about some Jeeps don't have one although there is a marker for one. If ther is no bulb or socket in the cluster, did Ford manufacture some Rangers without a Check engine light installed?

My '86 didn't have one either. The black plastic showed a spot for the check engine but no bulb [and no socket for one iirc]

Thanks for the confirmation, I would think the tech would be able to check somewhere. I will have to follow up with him. I remembered that I had asked that question years ago to a mechanic that if something was wrong would'nt the check engine light come on, really don't remember but I think he said it had something to do with the OBD-I not having a self check, I could be wrong.
