I have a 1994 3.0 Litre w/120K mi that started to run a little hot, and coughed coolant back into the overflow tank, a classic stopped up thermostat symptom. I replaced the tstat, no change. On a whim I removed the waterpump (what a pain in the ...) and surprise surprise, ALL the vanes were worn off the waterpump, it was just a spinning disc. Replaced it, all cooling problems vanished. My brother-in-law has a mustang, same engine, same complaint, same miliage, i told him, he removed the pump exact same thing!! Now I have always kept my coolant changed and correct mix, so I am thinking this is a common occurance. The symptom is exactly the same as a stopped tstat!! I bet a lot of engines have bit the dust thanks to the sheet-metal vanes on these water pumps.
