my transmission went out on me, it was a 5 speed on a 1990 Ford Bronco 2. What would be my best bet on a cheap reliable transmission.

There were 2 trannys offered in 90, the dreaded fm146 and the desired m50d. You want the m5od. Go to the tech library to help you id it. An easy way to tell is check your build date on the drivers door. Before 9/89, fm146, after 9/89, m5od.

the best way to check easily is for a kink in the shifter

Thank you, well I know I have the m5od. I really liked it, is there any other transmission I could get, maybe aftermarket? I know I've seen an adapter for the 2.9s to have a 4.0 ltr transmission or something similar

Try to find one from another 2.9. It has a lower 1st gear than the 4.0 m5od. Happy hunting.

An M5OD-R1. Basically any from when they came out up through the late 90's. I'm not sure after that, but I'm sure AllanD or adsm would probably know.

Pretty sure you can use any M5OD that came out of any V6 Ranger, Bronco II or Explorer. They all have basically the same bellhousing all the way up to the current model year. There is a better version that you can find in 2001+ Rangers and 97-2002 V6 Explorers.

This thread is very informative:
