1991 4.0 rebuild

Hey guys new to the forum. I have a 91 ranger xlt that I'm looking to do an engine rebuild on 285k miles on it. Just wanting to freshen it up for this winter. Tired of driving my 2003 7.3 in the snow I like the control of the smaller truck with the 5 speed better and wanting to pull my boat and 4 wheeler during hunting season with it. Not looking to do any cams or anything just a stock rebuild it has a coolant leak out the front of the engine somewhere haven't diagnosed that yet. Valve rattle and the ever famous lifter tick. Looking for opinions on a good quality rebuild kit and best option for heads cause I know if they ain't cracked YET they will be eventually and I might as well go ahead n fix it before it happens.

I picked up a rebuild kit from Norther Auto parts a few years ago. I had the basics, rings, bearings, I think it came with an oil pump, it was all Melling or Sealed Power parts, so good stuff, reasonable price. It also came with Fel-Pro head bolts, but I didn't use them because I wanted OEM as Fel-Pro was having issues at the time.

It didn't come with lifters, which that engine did need, but I didn't find out about that until after it was back together and running.

I would that it to a machine shop have the reman it you put it together because they will get everything for you. My guy in arkansas cost me the same as online prices sometimes. I just like it because it's next day and never had a problem fitting them together.

I have the same problem head gasket leak on my 1990 Ranger XLT 4x4 4.0L Supercab. I would also like to know the best option for a basic stock refresh. Or would it be cheaper to swap with a new crate engine? I would also like to address the lifters & push rod(s) issues that these engines have. Ford sells a crate engine for $3k plus $400 core charge total of $3400. Ouch!
