Cam sychronizer on 4 liter

Have a 2009 4+4, auto, Fx4, I have changed a synchronizer on the 3 liter and it wasn,t hard at all, wondering where it is on the 4 liter and if it is more difficult to do, Thanks for any replies.

You have the 4.0l SOHC engine in an '09 Ranger

Cam Sensor is on Drivers side valve cover, much easier to change than 3.0l in that no timing is needed, no synchronizer used

3.0l OHV and 4.0l OHV engines did use synchronizers for Cam sensors, which needed to be timed and were at the back top of the engine so hard to get at

I want to thank you for that reply RonD,this seems like a much simpler and reliable system, can I assume the sensor will be more trouble free than the earlier sycronizers and that this system is used in the 2010,2011 4 liter engines.

Generally yes, that part of the engine is less troublesome, since it has no moving parts, per se, and that it is much easier to do.

All the 4.0 SOHC engines used that design, so yes, same on the 10 and 11.

Again thanks for the info(adsm08), in general terms what should I watch or listen for to prevent any major breakdowns, possibly timing chain noises?

Timing chains would be the big thing. It usually starts as a rattle when letting off the gas or during shifts.

Thank you adsm08, from the info I have seen the tensioners don,t look hard to change (2 of them) so I hope not have an issue for awhile as mileage is 76000 KM's (47224 miles) but will listen for rattle.

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it. The issue was largely fixed by 2006.
