i am still running (or will be when i'm running!) with the computer; also, some time ago I pulled the 83 emissions diagram from the tech library here on this site, and am using that.

and whaddayaknow: right there on the diagram it shows where the diverter valve connects...oops! ok, admittedly I am a bit slow at times.

A common mistake on the vacuum diagram is the air bleed for the EGR. That is the closest solenoid to the firewall. What it does is allow the egr to close and pulls filtered air in from the top of the carb. There is a larger nipple that points down at a 45 degree angle on the back bottom of the flat part of the carb. Pull the hose off of the solenoid and make sure it is open and vents to the intake air inside of the air filter.
