Good afternoon everyone!
My 1987 Ranger 4x4 ext cab 2.9 was sidelined last spring when I got my 99 explorer. As much as I love this truck I need to put it up for sale but its developed a problem I’m trying to track down and figure out.
The last four or five times I’ve been able to take it out for a drive the engine has died on me after 30-40 minutes of driving. If I let it sit for an hour or two it’ll fire right back up and run great. The last two times I’ve been able to verify that a shot of starting fluid will get it to fire right up. I’ve also verified that gas will spray out of the Schrader valve on the fuel rail (It sprayed me half way up my arm). With that I’ve ruled out ignition and fuel so I suspect it’s electrical. It acts almost identical to my Honda when it had a cracked solder joint on the master relay. At this point I’m suspecting the problem will be in the circuit that controls the injectors, possibly a bad connection or solder joint and hopefully not the ecm.
I’m going to start tearing things apart, checking the relays and try to follow the wiring diagrams for that circuit. Will try to obtain a noid light to verify it’s the injectors unless someone knows an alternate to test for that, dvm etc…
I don’t have plates on it so getting it out for a test drive is difficult.
Thought I would check here first to see if anyone can sugest any known issues or common problems relating to this that I havn’t thought of yet or found from searching.
Appreciate any suggestions anyone has.
Thank you
Randy
