Hello,

My truck is in the shop getting some work done, including a new clutch. I figuried while they have the trans down its a perfect time to install a hurst shifter. I called summit and ordered the shifter over the phone. Shifter arrived and looks awesome.

shop says it wont work, that its a 3 bolt and my transmission is a 4 bolt.

Any ideas? My truck is a 89 Ranger STX 2.9L V6 4x4

Here is the top of my transmission

Looking at install write ups and videos transmissions have 3 hole. Mine obviously has 4 hole. Looking at the sheer size of the bolts on the hurst shifter the 4 bolts are much smaller.

Talking to hurst, apparently there were 3 transmissions used?

The 4x4 trans used from 88 to 92 with the 2.9L was the FM146. The Hurst shifter that is listed for the 88+ Rangers fits the M5OD only. IIRC the part description does specify that.

The differences will go deeper than just the bolt count, there is no adapting that shifter to make it work. Sorry.

Damn...

Hurst told me 3 were used in my year. The m50d, Ax-15 and the venture 1500/3500. Are any shifters made for my transmission? I mainly want to be able to change shift knobs. Mine is a splined press fit.

If that's all you wanted to do, just pull (or break) the old knob off the shaft and mount whatever parts store shiny thing you want...

I had one the was put on with a piece of fuel hose as a spacer to make the shaft large enough for the knob to fit tight. It was also somewhat effective at vibration dampening. Lol.

Or get a hair dryer and heat the knob up a bit. It will make the plastic knob expand and pop off.
