Differential case

Hello everyone,

EXPLORER my rim and tire 225/70/15 currently
I want to go to 265/70/15.
This can be a lot more work in the differential case
If you think I should change the gear ratio in the differential casing to prevent premature cracking of pinions?

id imagine u wont do any damage to the transfer case or differentials

Thank you very much for your reply, that I must do you it, my EXPLORER is a 1994 stock in differencial.
By cons wheel bearings are reinforced and front and rear axles completely rebuilt all new :icon_cheers:

I don't think you have to worry about cracking or wrecking the differential, but you would make it easier to start out [in a manual transmission] and save a little on gas if you went with a lower gear. If you have a gear ratio of 3.45 then going to 3.73 would be good and keep your speedometer correct. If you have a ratio of 3.73 then going to 4.10 would be good and keep your speedometer correct. You should try the bigger tires first before changing any gears because you may find that the gearing you have is good enough for what you are doing with your truck.

Ho my transmission is automatic I'm not going to change to a manual, the truck is a 3.73 ratio model stock you think should go?? .
I think the only worry will be the conssomation fuel will increase much anyway I ride pretty cool I'm not a Formula One driver at the wheel, I'm going to put in 285/70/15 and see.

Try the tires with your current ratio gears, if that works for you....great! If not, then I would go with 4.56 gearing with 285/70r15 tires.

Most likely your 1994 Explorer has 3.73 gears and the differential is not the "weak link"
in the drivetrain.

Going to taller tires will make the engine work harder and put additional strain on the transmission.

I rebuilt the entire front axle with parts from MOG.

The taller tires will not put enough strain on your differentials to cause concern.

However, as AllanD said, there will be more strain on your transmission, considering it will be working harder to turn the larger tires. But a 265/70/15 tire is only 30" or so, which isn't that much larger than the stock size.

Throw some 31x10.50r15's on - They don't rub on a 2-door sport. On a 4-door I'd get 30" unless I was lifting.

as most of the people above have said, i wouldn't worry about anything wearing out, nor about regearing, you will notice a difference in acceleration, but i honestly don't think it's enough to make a big difference... put the new tires on, give it a try and see what you think... 3.73 are just fine... i used to have 31" tires on my mustang with 2.73 gears. although it was a 5L v8
