Welcome to TRS :)

4.0l OHV was used from 1990 to 2000 in various Ford cars, vans and trucks.

It was a good high mile and reliable engine.

It did have one flaw, head casting had a weak point, so if engine was overheated the head would crack between valve seats.
Simple solution.............pull over if engine gets too hot, lol, which you should do with any engine.

4.0l SOHC is a completely different engine, it was used in Explorers starting in 1997 and Rangers in 2001.
2004 and earlier had timing chain issues, after replacing the chains and cassettes it was a good engine, but you have to pull out the motor to replace them.

Good read here: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4L_Conversion2.shtml

The 4.0 is a great engine. It improved and/or corrected many fatal flaws in the 2.8 and 2.9. It also has more power.

The heads were an issue, as stated, but this problem is common to all of the Cologne engines, and has a really simple fix. Just don't overheat the engine.

Valve train noise is common on the 4.0, but rarely means anything more serious than your engine makes an annoying noise. It is a very good choice for an engine swap.

I'll reinforce what others have said...

The 4.0 corrects many of the problems the 2.9 had and one new issue of it's own...

The 4.0 is subject to wear in the pushrod socket in the underside of the rocker arm.

But generally speaking a 4.0 is a much more reliable engine than a 2.9.

The 4.0 has a torque curve that's adapted better to everyday driving IE lower.

And push rods/rocker arms are much easier to service that lifters and cam bearings.
