I've got a 2000 2.5L 2WD XLT standard cab Ranger.

Finally got around to tracking down the parasitic drain that kills my battery when I let the truck set for a few days.

She draws 0.3 Amps with engine off, drops to 0.04 A when fuse #26 (in the door) is removed.

According to the owner manual, fuse 26 controls:

Battery Saver Relay
Electronic Shift Relay
Interior Lamp Relay
Power Window Relay (n/a, no power windows)
Electronic Shift Control Module
Map Light
GEM
Instrument Cluster

I tried pulling the map lights and turning off the dash lights, didn't solve the parasitic drain.

I'm having some trouble locating the relays on the list above. I searched the forum, and everyone says that in addition to the under hood relay box, there's ANOTHER relay box under the driver side dash above the gas pedal.

I have spent the past 45 minutes with my head under the driver side dash looking for this "black rectangular box" but I can't for the life of me find it!!! As far as I know, I'm not blind... or stupid! Now, I didn't pull any of the dash panels (should I have?), I was just poking around the open space above the pedals.

Can anybody post a photo, diagram, video, or SOMETHING that will help me locate this dang relay box? I've got a hunch that the battery saver relay is toast, but can't replace it until I find it!

Thanks in advance.

There is one in the 96 dash but you need to pull the two plates off...the plastic just pops off but there are two screws on the bottom...the other one comes out with about 6 or 8 screws and is metal.

Whether or not it is the source for the drain or what fuses are in it I have no idea...but worth checking into...

My battery was also going low after a few days of sitting but I think mine was the glove box light was not shutting off...and I only noticed this because I had the upper panel for the passenger side air bag open and could see the light on...it was the glove box switch wasn't tight so the light was staying on....

The Battery saver relay takes 20-30min to shut off power, after key is removed and doors are closed.

0.3 amps would be "normal" after shutting off truck and closing doors.
0.03-0.06 amps is "normal" after battery saver relay shuts things off.
Pulling fuse 26 is just doing what battery saver relay does, so maybe that relay is bad.

Only things on after 20-30 min. are clock/radio preset and RAP module(keyless entry, if you have it)

So shut down truck, close the doors, hook amp meter up to Positive battery cable and battery terminal, then wait 20-30 minutes to see if battery saver relay shuts off power.

If you have an under hood light unplug it.

Also check battery, unhook it from truck and put volt meter on it, write down voltage, leave meter connected and check it again after 10-15minutes, should be EXACTLY the same, if it is dropping the battery has a shorted cell and is self draining.

My '98 had the same exact problem. Since I can no longer stand on my head to look under the dash...I gave up and just added a master disconnect switch. I couldn't find anything related to that particular fuse either. Some problems are just not worth the effort to correct!
