I've got the same transmission and the same trouble with that crappy little plastic ball. I've used JB Weld to glue the ball on twice, but after popping off again, I'm looking for a better solution. I was thinking of trying to make a brass bushing and pressing it onto the end of the shifter. Does anyone know if a bushing made of brass would be ok in this type of application? I'm sure it's better than dissolved JB Weld, but since I can't find a replacement anywhere local, and no guarantees that a used shifter will have any better bushing, I'm leaning towards trying to make the brass bushing since I should be able to 'machine' it in my drill press with a metal file.

Any comments/opinions?

I think the brass idea would work. You could heat it up and slip fit it onto the shifter rod no problem. Then just file it down like you said.

I see no reason why it wouldn't work...

that's what i did to mine.
i cut off an empty 30-06 cartridge to about 1 inch
and drilled out the base and tapped it on
the tapered part of the shifter with a ratchet
socket. that holds the ball from sliding up.
it was a temp fix about 10 years ago, but
has since become permanent.

Okay so revisiting this... My shift stick in my 85 ranger manual 5spd just went completely limp, was able to get the tranny back into a gear to get back home... I just pulled my tk5 and as in the first set of pics there is no brass spring and in the second set of pics I have the same roughed up tip that goes into the tranny... but I don't see a plastic ball or anything that fits into the transmission fitting. Should there be a spring there? is there a way to make a ball or something to fit on the end of the stick to use this until I can get a new shifter... Can't afford $200 right now and would really like to fix this for the short term... I've checked all junk yards, they don't sell the shifter separate from the tranny around here... Thanks

Still need a shifter for the TK5? the one in my 84 BII is good, but, I had the outputshaft break, so, the tranny is toasted.
