It's kinda hard to buy 'new' rims that are damaged. All you really gotta check for are cracks, dents, and rust.. and cracks would pretty much be an alloy wheel thing. If bottom dollar budget is the name of the game then you'd most likely be after a set of steelies anyhow.. where dents&rust would stand right out.

Theres no shortage of used 15" and 16" 5x4.5 wheels out there.. it's definitely one of the most common bolt patterns.. at least was. Millions upon millions of vehicles were sold with wheels that would fit. To make it even easier, a lot of the vehicles that have that bolt pattern ran tires roughly the same size as the ranger AND had similar backspacing/offset.. so with even a meager amount of luck a guy could probably find himself a set of wheels wrapped in good tires on CL/marketplace for just a few hundred bucks.
I found some that are a good deal that look like 1998 ranger wheels. the offset is 12 mm but the guy doesn't know the backspace. Would those fi?

I think the speed rating is the S in 105S.
Here's pics of relevant parts, excuse dirtiness please.

cool. yeah I think you have to look at the combo of the offset and backspacing.
the JEGS post has info how to measure them
I'm lost at this point, sorry. I just always go w/ oem tire sizes that fit my oem wheels so I never spent much time on it. Interested though.
You do want it correct or your front/rear wheel spacing won't be right and/or you could run into rub problems etc. Or they look weird (stick out past fenders which in some states is a no-no).
I may actually go, technically, outside oem for the XLT tire replacements, but 31x10.5R15 and 265/75R15 are virtually the same thing so I should have zero issues with a 31". Just depends on the brand, what they will carry.
The fender flares add a bit of fender width on the XLT; without them, the wider tires - might- stick out otherwise (guess).

The date stamp is usually in an oval shaped stamping on the side wall. Often only on one side of the tire.

Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.
You can figure out backspacing as long as you know the width of the wheel and the offset.. it's just a little math.

Example.. 7" wide wheel with 0 offset would be 3.5" backspacing. -13mm-ish offset would be around 3" backspace and +13mm would be about 4" backspacing.

That all being said, '98 ranger wheels should do you just fine.

yes I see oval with date code on my XLT tires. I see no such thing on the Mazda tires but I'll check the inside face of them when it's not raining. thanks.

I bought a set of 15" polished aluminum Pro Comp Wheels for about $140 each. I chose new because wheels are the most important way of increasing the value of your car.

Wheels/tires are 40% of the appearance, right? That's what I was always told. There's 4 of them, that's 40% (by old math method).

FWIW I have the Hankook H735s, which come in your stock size, on my truck. I don't know if I'd say I'm in love with them, but for light-duty highway tires, they've been fine. Good in the rain, very quiet so far. Ride seems a little rougher than I expected. They have a 70k tread life, but if I get 45-50k I'll be pretty happy. Next time I'll get Michelin LTX, which, annoyingly, doesn't come in my factory size anymore but close enough. Good luck in your search!
