After blowing through starters we found 2.8 has a metric flywheel, starters standard. 2:3 won't mesh. Need non Mitsubishi flywheel (as that's who manufactured the mtr? I am told) or a metric spline starter. Just an fyi

Hey Robin, welcome to TRS.
That's a tough deal man, I don't remember the Fords so much but the old Chevy's seemed the same starter fit the 327 V8, the 283, the 235-6 and the 230, not sure how many more. How times have changed :D

Just ordered a new motor, couple cylinders spider cracked in this one. Going to change out flywheel then. Yeah, I had a 70 Cuda and 2 70 Challengers. You could do about anything with them! This is us fixing grandpa's, my husband's, posterity present last year to 14 yr old granddaughter, who's turning 15 now .

I had problems with the starter on a Bronco II with a 2.8L and 5-speed manual. Ended up fixing the problem by swapping to a starter from a 1996 Ford Ranger 4.0L with an automatic transmission (has to be a starter for an automatic).

You also have to we wire the starter wiring since the relay is on the 4.0L starter.
