Here is the craigslist add I am thinking about trying to get...

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pml/ctd/2169669865.html

So this truck is a 1992 Explorer, with auto tranny and electric transfer case.

What are the major complaints/problems with the electric systems???

My questions mostly have to do with the 4wd/transfer case/hubs, and the tranny.

First off, I have a 88 B2 heading for the junker... are the manual hubs off the B2 any use with the D35 that would be present on the explorer?

Is the 1350 Manual from my B2 any use with the explorer?

I assume the explorer has the mazda tranny? I assume my 2.9 '88 Bronco II has the FM145?
What is the advantage of the mazda tranny over the fm145/146???

Is there anything else that is the same? Heater core? Radiator hoses? drive trains or connections? Axle shafts? Anything at all? I would love to save parts off the B2 before I trash it....

If the drive train is too long, would it work in a lifted application of any sort?

Are the B2 front or rear drive shaft solid enough to withstand the power of the 4.0?

The ultimate plan is to use the Explorer for a parts truck onto another B2 or Ranger down the line... (D35/8.8", 4.0, ect.)

Please I want all suggestions and ideas!
Thanks.

The 88 had a D28, so no your manual hubs will not work.

The tranny in the explore is an A4LD.

The mazda tranny is the M5OD and it'll hold up behind a 4.0. The 1350 m is not as good as the 1354m but will work.

Nothing off your BII will be an upgrade for the Explorer. The trouble with the electronic transfer case is not that it is weak or anything, but the motor gets stuck in 2wd. It's an easy fix, replace the plastic bushing with a short length of rubber hose or a zip-tie, clean the connections, and clock the cover for the motor a degree or so counter-clockwise when you put it all back together, and it will work great.

Yea the automatics in the First Gen Explorer is an A4LD and not that great of a transmission but some do have good luck with them. Front axle is Dana35 using the transmission from your BII isn't going to be any better than the A4LD if you want manual then swap in the M50D from an 89/90 BII or 91+ 4.0 Ex/ranger The electric shift transfer case isn't that bad its just like previously mentioned they can get stuck in gear but sometimes with the rap of a hammer it will free up and be useable again or sometimes needs the bushing replaced.

I'll give my opinions here. The stuff on my b2 is from a 1st gen ex

1. The a4ld has held up to everything I've put it thru. And still works just fine.
2. Unless you flat tow your vehicle the auto t-case is just fine.
3. The auto hubs are what you wanna change. Auto hubs are okay on an occasional wheeler.

But honestly- the auto trans and t-case are fine. The hubs are what I hate.

Well the plan would be to buy the explorer and wheel it for a while, and down the road buy another B2 or ranger to steal the d35/8.8" rear, 4.0l, leaf springs, and whatever else..

But I hate Automatics. With a passion. Would rather shoot myself in the foot... But for the price, axles and a 4.0l are almost worth it alone.

When I get a new Ranger/b2, I dont want to use a Fm145 with a 4.0l do I? I want the m50d? Has anyone used a FM145 with the 4.0 and blown it because of too much power or anything??

Also when I do get to stripping the explorer, would the current ECU in the explorer work with a manual tranny, or would I have to source a new ECU from a manual truck?

Is there anything worth saving from the B2 I own now, that needs to be wrecked? Drive shafts? Brake components? Anything???

if you are planning on doing what i've done and using the ex stuff on the b2/ranger you pick up later.. you don't need anything from your current b2, unless the interior looks ok.

i'm not fond of auto's either, but hey, it works.. so for now i'm using my budget on other upgrades. the a4ld has never let me down.. in mud or on the rocks. granted i aint done hardcore rockcrawling. but i'd address the hubs first on the d35.

and yeah you'll probably want the md05. if i can find one cheap i'll swap mine out. but till then my funds are going in gears/tires/axle swaps.. things like that.

again the auto t-case has never let me down. but you don't wanna change the 1354 for a 1350 regardless of if its E or M

Nah interior is pretty much trashed... Too bad. I was really hoping to salvage something off my b2...

Can anyone answer wether or not I would need a new computer if I wanted to swap the auto tranny for a man?

Also, would the explorer be 3.73 gears stock?

Thanks.

most ex's i've found are 3.27's or 3.55's in 4wds. the 2wd's have 3.73's sometimes.
