depending on your motor and cam, id go maybe 2500-3000,but no more if you drive it much on the highway. you can go more, but you may not like it and it will make more heat

At the most i would go 2000. Also plan on running a tranny cooler with a higher stall converter, they build up a lot of heat as was stated above.

is this indeed a C4? The 3rd pic shows how it says Ford on the tailhousing. Seems like its a C5 housing on C4 trans.

The bellhousing came off a foxbody mustang. I tried fitting an AOD bell on there and the bolt pattern was different. It is probabally a C5 bell.

The tech pages say if there is a hump in the oil pan it is a c-5 instead of c-4.

But the pics you posted looks like an AOD to me. I am not a tranny expert by anyones standards though.

got the vac modulater hose attached to my intake manifold. I am not sure if thats how it goes. I figured it was an open vac source for it to be hooked up to. Maybe it goes to the carb?
As I recall, if the line falls off, you will have 1st gear only.. or very hard shift points.
The vac line hooked up wrong won't prevent the tranny from going into gear.

what year is the C4. I think I have a stock torque converter in my basement.
Also a rusted C4 in the back yard.

other WEB sites say the c4 and c5 look the same, pan shape, number of bolts...

im not sure on the year of this tranny. When i got it, it had a 5 bolt bell attached to a 5 bolt 289v8. Had the oddball 141t flexplate and a 2500 stahl converter. Took the converter out awhile ago and when i shook it around it sounded like something inside was loose. I figured it was broke internally.

noise in torque converter

and when i shook it around it sounded like something inside was loose. I figured it was broke internally
That noise is the impeller hitting the stator; when the torque converter is on the tranny, the input shaft and stator shaft keep the parts from hitting each other. So if the converter was working before it was removed it should be OK

unless, it was left outside and got water in it. Parts can rust inside the torque converter.

p.s. my 68 mustang with 289 has a smaller torque converter from a 6-cylinder transmission. Had to modify the flex plate to make it work, but it will have a higher stall speed on a larger motor. Helped prevent stalling the engine with a race cam.
