"Back in the day" Old fart rants.

The way I see it is this; Why smoke? What good purpose does it serve? None

I don't like how socialist the US government(and media/schooling/industry) has gotten, but the way that we remove power from world 'powers that be', is we function correctly as an individual. Where we lack doing that is when government is empowered.

Some of the comments on this subject show the lack of past history knowledge. ie: watch ANY old black and white films from 20's 30's 40's 50's and 60's and see how they glamorized smoking, thats what boomers grew up with, and chances are if your parents or grandparent grew up in that era and took up smoking so did their children, I dare say today you can see it in many modern movies.
If you have ever smoked or known people that do and they find it very very hard to quit , cut them some slack, as one of the "over the hill gang" I will tell you this, it is getting harder and harder for me to find patience to tolerate todays young generation BUT i'm doing it, and if you want to live your life complaining about what other people do , whether it's the way they were brought up or the choices the've made your going to be miserable your WHOLE life.

As for us seasoned citizens , we learn to roll with tolerance as best we can.

Edit: Through education and medicine we've learned and been taught smoking is hazardous to our health, in the early part of the last century we did not know how bad it was for you.

Excellent points...tolerance is supposed to be the key to our living together...we are told not to hate, not to bully, and to overlook each others differences...

Only thing I would "debate" is the reported "harm" of smoking...

EDIT: I just took out my vent section...because I can...and because I know that nobody, not a scientist, not a doctor, nobody...has been able to provide me...even after asking, begging, pleading...and hours and hours of reading...a single shred of evidence that smoking, and smoking alone...is the cause of any diseases (OK...I will concede breathing properly...and wheezing...and maybe a few others..but not the big C or the big HA)...

I am always happy to send copies of my research to anyone interested...or discuss the major findings of ten years of reading, reading, reading...but I haven't smoked for six months or so and am always in fear of actually taking up the habit again...because it is a nasty, expensive habit that stinks...yes...stinks...smells like UGH!

But I do admit that I enjoyed about 99% of the time I smoked...nothing quite like sucking back burning plants wrapped in skinny paper...with a morning coffee...or driving down the highway with the radio on and the sweet smell of Chinese tobacco or wherever it's grown now that all the farmers are growing GM foods that will cause more damage than tobacco ever would (or so THEY say)...

And there it is, I KNEW SOMEONE WOULD BRING UP THE 'WE GREW UP WITH IT' AND 'IT'S HARD TO QUIT' MENTALLITY. Null and void, you should have known better. And not because "popular"-CULTure more recently told you so. lol, just saying.

And you learn to roll with tolerance as best you can? Why? You shouldn't tolerate something if it's wrong.

And this is what's wrong with most youth - it's all black and white. As you grow and experience life and other peoples views you will learn tolerance; or you will become what you hate.

And furthermore, how can you have a "back in the day" rant without 'we grew up with it'?

I figure the same...lol...but I've quit cold turkey and lasted ten years before I tried just one...and that was about 25 years ago...so good time to stay off them...

When you are immersed in a "tobacco culture" it's not as easy to deny or walk away as it seems...although as noted above, I did quit for ten years just on the idea that I wanted to be different...but...smoking was being different too...non conformist.

As for tolerance...there are many things we all absolutely must tolerate in order to have a peaceful society/world...I don't like having to tolerate children starving in other countries...but I thought there was a solution for that...but they still starve...and tolerating the politicians or warlords that steal the money intended to feed the children is not something I do...but not much can be done without going over there and shooting them yourself...not something I can honestly achieve these days...

And this is what's wrong with most youth - it's all black and white. As you grow and experience life and other peoples views you will learn tolerance; or you will become what you hate.

My grandfather started smoking when he was in Japan during the Korean war. If you didn't take a "smoke break" you didn't get any kind of a break at all while on duty.

Not sure when he got back but my grandmother and my dad (born in '57) more or less forced him to quit with the help of my dad's two siblings. Both my grandmother and dad have asthma pretty bad and he couldn't quit on his own apparently. With the four tag teaming grandpa and throwing away his cigarettes as they found them eventually he just quit.

I can see it would be hard to quit, I have enough breathing problems with just my allergies to make evens starting pretty laughable.

Hahaha, it is black and white. When it seems grey, you're not breaking it down enough. And I direct that more towards my generation.

Never attribute to malice things that are better explained by stupidity.
Okay, I admit that tobacco smoke is offensive and harmful to some folks, and I am glad they no longer have to suffer exposure caused by inconsiderate asses in public places, but it has gone way too far in some cases. There are companies today that do not permit employees to smoke on their property. Even inside their own vehicles, and others who will not even hire someone who admits that they smoke. As for bars, taverns and coffeehouses...They should have designated smoking sections. It's like chocolate and peanut butter!!! On another note, as for government interference with private life and choices in the name of safety and security, I very much liked America without seat-belts, bike helmets, kids still in car seats at age 5, flirting without a sexual harassment suit being brought up, kids eating real food in school and riding in the back of a pickup truck. Don't even get me started on the cameras everywhere watching/tracking us/ sending us traffic tickets. How about communication privacy? GPS? I would gladly give up all of the so called security and convenience of the digital/information age to go back to "the good old days". I had a library card, could make a phone call, write letters, use a map and go visit someone to talk face to face. I never wore a seat-belt or bike helmet either, and if the government and law enforcement disappeared one day; it would have been years before anybody even noticed they were gone. What a totally screwed up place we let our country turn into.

You could go to the gas station with a quarter and a gallon gas can. Fill the can and get large jaw breaker to suck on wile running the mini bike all day.

Well, in my area, in my 28 years, I can remember my town being more 'mom and pop' like. It was a big suburban town, but it was a place where a lot of people here knew eachother and had stake in the town. Then, it lost the GM bearing plant and other factories and people struggled and started moving away. And many of the smaller and medium size businesses went out or were bought out by big corporations. And a lot of the farms became commerce and neighborhoods. I miss that about the old days, but I guess I wouldn't realize how nice it was, if it hadn't changed.
