$20 belkin from walmart was a plug and play for my dad. he didn't have to set anything up at all.
You can sometimes get a good deal on the linksys WRT series on newegg.com . It's all I use in my home and never have any problems with them, but I wipe the stock firmware and put on DD-WRT as soon as I get them.

Been using that router for years. Recommended it to many people and have never once had a bad one yet. They all still work flawless. I think ive had mine for like 7+ years now.
