Went out to Elbe this morning to do some wheeling when 10 minutes into the first trail I lost MOST power to my rear wheels. When I say most I mean that the rear end would engage sometimes after a few pops and cracks. So far, I am responsible for 6 transmissions exploding (all manual and different) and 1 rear end (Dana 60, snapped the spider shaft) and never felt anything like what happened on my B II today.

I didn't hear anything break, nor did I feel anything. This could have been for many reasons but I've got a good ear/feel for these things usually. Second, the rear end never binded up and it appeared that the driveshaft never quit turning. I wasn't able to tell if the yoke in the dif was turning with it (if the slipjoint stripped?). Occasionally the rear wheels would get power (thank god) and work like normal but a strange and hard popping could be heard/felt. I couldn't determine if the popping noise was engaging the rear wheels or vice versa nor could I hear where it was coming from. For a while I thought that the spiders in the rear end just demolished themselves and the front hubs were just giving up.

I have not yet torn into it but if anyone has ever experienced this and can push me in a good direction I'd appreciate it. If not I will report my findings. Thanks.

AJ

pop the transfer case in neutral then try to turn the transfer case output shaft with a pipe wrench and see where its lose, but i agree with BENNY its probably going to be one of the cv joints on the driveshaft

I may have toasted the rear end... Hard to believe if it's true. Rigs only got 94xxxx and I'm only running 31"s but stranger things have happened. The popping noise was only occasional though. And the tires never once locked up in forward or reverse. Hmm. Got lazy this afternoon and decided I'll just check on it tomorrow. I'll post my findings and thanks for the help.

Random breaks suck. I'm interested to see the carnage.
I'll just assume that you didn't roast the D-60 with your 2.9 in front of it, lol

I have a friend said the driveshafts had a bad habit of falling out of the b2's. Is it possible yours has moved enough to slip?

First, is is stock? Does it still have the stock CV rear drive shaft? It could have blew up a CV, or you could have lunched some teeth off the spiders in the 7.5 rear... they are a common break too.

That's what I was thinking too. Stripped or cracked a spider.

Okay, haven't torn into her yet but tonight is the night. Almost positive I tore the spiders up but wont be sure til' later. I will post pics of my finds, I promise!

As for the Dana 60, That was in my F250. She had a healthy 460 under the hood and loved to smoke the 36"s... Until that day she blew. Snapped the spider shaft right in half, destroyed the carrier and stripped a few teeth right off the ring gear! About 4 months after I replaced the entire axle I ended up having to toss another T-19 tranny in her as I blew second and third... Too much foot for not enough truck I geuss. Seems to happen more than I'd like to admit.

Thanks for all the help guys. Love this place.

Yeah, I was also going to say spiders. Just take 'em out and weld that up! Happened same thing on my buddy's B2, exactly like you were describing. He just welded his all together. Haha.

i've never seen the stock driveshaft fail in a way that wasn't catastrophic, so i'd be looking at the spiders
