I just bought a 2wd 97 ranger with a 3.0 and an auto transmition. Not to sure what gears I have in it but I have an 8.8 with 4.10s out of a 99 explorer sittin in my garage. Is it worth it to put that diff in? I havn't had a chance to drive the truck yet and have never driven one with the 3.0 in it so I have no idea what to expect.

the 3.0 is a revver. the deeper gearing will help make the most of its high peak torque...and may increase economy.

that said, 4.10's with the small tire sizes used on 2wd trucks might make for quite high rpms at highway speeds. if you give me your tire size, i can tell you what kind of rpms you'll turn at various speeds.

the 8.8 is also a large upgrade in strength over the 7.5 currently in your truck.

It'll be fine at any speed you are willing to make it go witht hat size tires and 4.10 gears.

3.0's are completely willing to spin at 4000rpm until you get tired of listening to them.

you'll turn about 2500 RPM at 65 MPH in overdrive. about 2100 RPM at 55.

i'd say go for it. you'll love the peppy low gearing.
