Go buy an UGLYS book. That is a reference for electricians and electronics. There are too many variables with the question you ask for anyone to safely answer it here.

Do you think 10 Gage would be good?

What is the rated max current draw of the welder?
20A = 12GA
30A = 10GA
40A = 8 GA

I would say bigger is better.
Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Might be cheaper to just buy a pre made one...

So you are plugging into a dryer outlet or a welder outlet?
Harbor Freight should sell the welder cords.

Im plugging it into the stove plug. I already swapped the plug on the welder just need the extension cord to run it outside.

Years back my dad made an extension cord from 8 gauge house wire ~ 30' long. It's worked for me for 20 years. A bit of a pain to coil up though.

I'm using 30 feet of 8-3 tek cable for mine lol. It was free, so I only had to buy the ends. Hard to hurt it being armor sheathed and all...
