Think i just made an awesome buy. Picked up a ZF 5 speed ,transfer case, driveshafts , clutch master, pedals, shifters, like new clutch, flywheel and engine plate off a 89 f250 with 5.8. The guy had it all in his garage for a swap he had planned but sold the truck. got it all for $$275. good deal or not. That much closer to the v8 swap now.

You wouldn't happen to live near Omaha Ne would you? There was a guy selling that exact setup on craigslist near me for that same price.

On a side note, i thought i read you might need to do so massaging to get the zf to fit, but i could be wrong.

Good luck on swap :icon_thumby:

Do you know of anyone that has used ZF? That would be a nice alternative to the M5OD if they fit halfway decent...

No, just thought i read it in the endless pages of v8 swaps, but i could be wrong. It would be a nice alternative, i could find zf's like crazy but not M5OD's.

I do live about an hour from omaha. I plan on doing a 3 inch body lift so should fit good. No not sure on any more zfs for sale but do have a m5 for sale now.

I am in the same boat as you, I can remember it being thrown around but not where.

I do like the prospect of a creaper gear and a tranny that a little 302 in a Ranger could never do harm to.

The only getcha is I bet the shifter is forward like the earlier M5OD.

I've seen it, I just dont remember where. It will fit with some trimming, hammering, and a body lift. I'm using one in my Cummins swap, keep your eye on my build thread.

That's a pretty good buy depending on conditition of the trans. With clutch and flywheel that's a good buy for sure. The pedal assembly doesn't matter the stock ranger stuff works just fine. Not sure if the brackets and such from a fullsize will fit on a ranger firewall or not. A SBF ZF is starting to be hard to find anymore, most will bring $500 in ok shape. If it has a pile of miles on it you might want to just replace the sycros now before you put it in. If anyone remembers a ZF in a V8 Ranger it was most likely mine; I think someone has one in a BII now as well. Reguardless you need a body lift, will have to trim the hole for the shifter and cut and reweld the shifter so it's not in the dash. Without a bodylift you will need a lot of cutting. It's not a bad trans but isn't all that strong either, the strongest is only rated at 470 ft-lbs. An 89 is a zfs542 so that's 420 ft-lbs. A normal 302/351 that doesn't see deep water it's a great choice. If you plan on lots of mud and water or made upwards of 400 ft-lbs I would suggest an automatic. My clutch was toast from all the water and it's a miracle the rest held behind the stroker to begin with. That t-case you have is on the large side, it won't fit without notching the frame. A Np205 or 208 will be a better fit. Sounds like you have a good start.

Yeah i think it will be ok. May tear it down for an inspection any way this winter. Dont plan on getting to carried away. This is my daily driver . Iam using an explorer motor bored .030 over with gt40 heads and a mild cam. Running mustang computer out of a 90 . Hoping to stay about the same mpg. But have the advantage of pulling a hill with out downshifting or maybe even pass some one with out a 1 mile clearing lol.

You shouldn't have any problems then. You definitely won't get a race car shift from that thing though. They are kinda do have the best of both worlds with a low 1st and overdrive.
