I have a 1991 Ranger Custom 4.0 automatic trans it was sitting a while and rats ate the harness i replaced the harness with one from a 1991 Ranger Custom 4.0 that was a manual and it didnt have the MAP sensor plug also i replaced the motor with a newer 97-00 4.0 OHV do i need to upgrade the wire harness and computer to that year when i turn the key it does nothing but two dash lights say parking brake and check oil i can jump the solenoid and it turns over fine but no spark? HELP PLEASE!!!

The manual had a switch on the clutch pedal instead of the one on the shift linkage. Check the diagram for the starter in one of the figures I posted in your other thread.

Will i not be able to get spark because of that switch and on what linkage there isnt a switch on my linkage i didnt take the harness from the tranny i unlcipped above the driver wheel well

ive read the wiring diagram i still dont understand where this switch is or how to bypass it

Check the clutch assembly inside the cab...there should be a clip with a couple of wires running to it...that is the clutch starter bypass...if the clutch is not depressed the engine won't start...

You can try putting a U shaped wire between the two wire connections on this and it will bypass that switch and allow the engine to turn over...

thats what your not getting i dont have a clutch assembly i have an automatic trans and i only replaced my harness in my engine bay nothing in the interior would the computer be able to tell its a manual engine harness

If the harness is the one that connets into the firewall, there's a pink wire coming from the ignition switch that goes down to the neutral switch and back to the starter solenoid with a red/light blue wire. That's for the starter to engage. I don't know what could be different for the ignition. The wire color for ignition is red/light green to feed the coil in run.

no its the one that connects into the computer and i have the same computer thats the thing i dont understand when i push the brake pedal it says check engine i've replaced all the relays it doesnt get spark and my fuel pump isnt turning on

Obviously the harness is a mismatch and you would need to match it properly. Sounds like the connectors are similar but the wires are not matching up the way they should to run things properly.

The motor is 97-00 4.0 but the wiring is from two different model years...the original plus the wiring harness in the engine bay.

I'm sure you could splice wires to make the fuel pump work and may manage to get the dash lights to work the way they should but you are probably looking at a few days of puttering around and possibly quite a bit of frustration.

The ideal solution would be to match the original harness with the newer engine...by that I mean removing sensor connections that were not on the newer engine if possible or upgrading the wiring entirely to the newer engine...that may mean removing the inside wiring and replacing it with the harness from the 97-00 model year.

Either way can be done...just a matter of how much time and energy you can put into it.

thanks mark 88 thats the point im at right now ill let you both know when i get the new harness in if it works or not.

I fixed my original harness and put it back in and it does the same thing im getting 12 volts into the EEC and im only getting 2.2 volts out of the EEC to the relays could my EEC be bad?

That's very possible. If the original damage caused the wires to cross and feed power where it shouldn't. Have you checked all of the grounds? When you say 2.2 V to the relays, can you explain that? It should ground the relays to trigger them on.

all the grounds are good for sure i've had three different people check and i only get 2.2 volts right at the EEC from the wires that go all the way to the relays and 2.2 volts at the relay

They don't send power to the relays. Check the relay power and see what's there. What are the wire colors you're checking?
