Hey guys,
Doing a 01 5.0 from explorer to 99 ranger swap. How did you guys get plug c124 to stretch far enough to work?

Which plug are you referring to (c124)?

SVT

Its the big square one that is conected to the one that goes to the computer

Ok, that plug didn't sound familiar as I've not had to mess with that one. I've done a few v8 swaps, and I haven't had to lengthen that plug, but the 42 pin square plug (c110/c115) I did have to lengthen. I soldered and heat shrunk each wire. Check out the first post of my sport Trac v8 build thread for more detailed info on this...

Yeah thats the one I was talking about, the Evtm for a 2000 ranger said it was plug c124
I wander if there is another way, or should I break out the soldering iron.

You've got one of two options, both involve soldering. I originally was planning to take a male and female plug and make a 12" extension that plug n play deal, but opted to cut a spare plug off with 10" of longer wire and solder it in for a more factory look. The 4.0 routes that plug under the brake booster, the 5.0 routes it over. It will reach without extending, but its tight...

Like Ranger SVT, I ended removing the plug from my 2.3 engine harness with about 12 inches of wire and soldered and shrink wrapped it all together. Looks like a huge job, but only took 2-3 hours once I got set up to make it happen. I did however cross a couple of wires and it took some time to track this mistake down and correct it.

I grafted 2 Explorer 5.0 engine harnesses (one good, one damaged) together to extend the 42-pin end about 10 inches.

Certain combos of Ranger bay harness and Ex 5.0L engine harness can be made to work together without the extension and others can't. Depends on the year and the original engine that was in the Ranger. I originally had the unmodified harnesses rerouted and plugged together (barely) to get the engine running. I like it better with the modified harness.

I ran into a wire on the new plug that has nothing to connect it to, it is the number 28 spot can I keep going?

Not a problem. Pin 28 (og/bk) in the Explorer 42-pin is for the PCM input from the optional air suspension. The same pin is empty in the 99 Ranger connector.

Ok, first of all thanks a lot for all of your help I really appreciate it. I have pin 27 and 28 empty on the explorer plug, that is there is nothing in the ranger harness to plug into them.
Then I have pin 20, 29, and 33 on the ranger plug with no spot to plug them into on the explorer plug. Do I just tape these up and move forward or is it something I am missing?

Pin 27 goes to message center in center console (not needed)
Pin 20 is lt bl/yel I didn't have to move this one
Pin 29 is bl/bk didn't have to move this one
Pin 33 red/wh I didn't have to move this one
On pins 20, 29, and 33 even though the wires were not there on one side, my schematics were the same wire color (my schematics didn't give me function, just color codes) so i left it. I later got a diagram that has circuit id and function, but its not in front of me...

OK dont need 20,27,28,29, and 33. So just tape these up and put it back together? Is that right?

20 is clutch pedal position input to the PCM. Not used w/ 5.0 Ex automatic.
27, 28 are Explorer options only. Don't need for Ranger.
29 is 4WD low range input to PCM. Not used on the 2WD or AWD 5.0 Ex.
33 is the transmission input that allows the electronic transfer case to change ranges in neutral only. Not used on the 2WD or AWD 5.0 Ex.

So, assuming that you are running your Ex 5.0 with an Ex 4R70W, you shouldn't need any of those.

I am running the ranger transfer case, will that matter for 29 and 33?
