On a '92 Ranger, how do I remove the metal trim that goes around the windshield? Thanks.

Dave

The trim is held on with small metal clips. On my '91 I just pried them off with a clip tool, a standard screw driver would work. Just remember after 18-20 years they are easy to break, so take your time and be careful around the glass.

Do I have to pry in a certain direction? I've seen the clips you are talking about and everybody I've ever seen mess with them just rip and tear......clips get broken, trim gets bent, etc, etc. I want to (and need to) remove the trim correctly, so any directions would be great. What's a trim removal tool look like?

Thanks again,
Dave

This is my clip tool

As far as I can tell you just need to pry/pull the trim straight up, the clips should come off the tab on the pillar. If not you might try wiggling gently prying the trim away from the glass you may be able to get the trim itself off the clip. I didn't pay too much attention to how they came off, I'm not planning on putting mine back on. I am filling the gap with black urethane to prevent my water leaks from coming back.
This is one of my trim pieces with the clip put back in to provide an example of what you are dealing with.

If you do happen to break a clip, LMC Truck sells them, they also sell some trim pieces. If the trim does get bent in the process they are metal and can be bent back into shape for the most part.

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes for you.

Thanks for the great answer.

Funny you should mention water leaks....I've got the same problem. Is this common on Rangers? After a long heavy rain, the rug is absolutely soaked.....I'm talking an actual puddle at me feet. I fear what my floors look like under the carpet. Probably rusted out. All my vehicles end up rusted out. Really ticks me off!!

Dave

Yeah the A-pillars tend to rust around the windshield. I actually had to remove and throw away my original floor covering. As for you carpet, you can probably dry it out but you may need new jute padding. My floors didn't rust any but I do drive with a floor plug removed to allow any water to drain.
