Will these dipstick-less engines find their way into the "economy brands" the lower end? Those of us that drive normal vehicles and not a BMW.

What will this mean for resale value, and could the dipstick be a thing of the past on virtually all vehicle motors in the near future.?

What would this mean for the Used market, would depreciation increase as buyers no longer can check the oil on a used car?

Wow, I never thought about that.

I hope so, there are many cars that I'd like to buy but can't afford yet and I know I'll never forget how to check a dipstick.

I don't know, I hate to think that it will come down to that. But it might.

The automatic transmissions that are missing the dipstick aren't so bad, actually nice in that you can't overfill them. But engine oil is a whole 'nother story... lot of cars out there leaking or burning oil but not ATF!

There's a sensor in them that allows the computer to signal how low your oil is, simular to a fuel pump sending unit isnt there? I remember reading something about these systems a few years ago...

Yes there is a sensor, and if often very inaccurate.

Because it is like this, you check you oil with the computer, it would say OK, OK, OK, OK, OK, next time it would go: BAM ADD 1L NOW. WTF? I swear last time it was OK!!!!

So they need to replace maybe more sensors or whatever, because you would be driving with like 99% lack of quart of oil until it reaches 1 quart, so computer would finally recognize that you need to top off!!!

a computer won't tell you when the oil is black. i am not a fan of anything like this.

i think the dipstickless transmissions are a way to prevent idiots from adding any kind of ATF to them. since a lot of new transmissions require special fluids

mercedes and BMW like to hide their transmission dipsticks, they are usually hidden under some black cap(lock) that take a special tool to remove.

Yeah, my foxbody mustang oil pans have low oil level senders.

I wish they made a tank that would automatically top off the oil so didn't have to check it every other day in my Ranger. :icon_idea:

Just further evidence of dumbing-down the driving experience.

Meh, more of an engine that needs drug out behind the shed and put out of its misery... but I enjoy the truck too much yet.

I don't mind once a week in the F-150, but once a week will get you in trouble with my Ranger sometimes if it is driven a lot.

Interesting thoughts...

So are these dipstick-less trannies basically like the manual ones? Just a fill plug and a drain plug?

people are just starting to look at vehicles as a means of getting around and take them for granted which is stupid because if they just take care of a vehicle it will last a long time. this is exactly why im afaid to leave my truck with my wife when i go to korea cause if something is making a sound or scraping or grinding she will just turn up the radio till she can't hear it. or take it to the crappiest oil station and have them change the oil with nicky no-name brand, strip out the drain threads and cause it to die. people just don't care anymore and don't want to trouble shoot their own problems. they want computers to do it for them.

+1!!! very well stated!

That's the whole point of the OBD II system. Plug in the computer, get the codes, and follow the step-by-step procedure on how to fix the problem. Simple as that.

As for the dipsticks. I hope they don't, I quite enjoy knowing how much oil is in my truck.
