Will a 2.9 intake/fuel injector setup fit and work on a 4.0

Ok first of all let me say great web site. Visited numerous times and decided it was time to join the fun. Now back to the question...I am very aware that the 4.0 and it's MAF system is way better than the 2.9 speed density system. Reason I ask though is that my 2.9 in my primarily street driven Bronco II is about to give up the ghost due to the poor oiling to the upper end that was very common with these engines with a lot of miles. In my area it is extremely hard to find a used replacement that is decent shape for a decent price. The 4.0 however is allmost a dime a dozen. Problem is that right now I don't have the time to do all the nessesary wiring adaptations to make a 4.0 run as it came. Basically this would, if it would work, be a get me by till I have the time, not to mention the shop space, to devote to the wiring to make it MAF again. Thanks in advance!

No. The ports won't match up, and the injectors aren't big enough. Just won't work right.

Sorry dude.

Welcome to the site though. We'll help you get something figured out.

should run,tho it might be a bit lean.the parts will bolt on,just need to swap the cps with the 2.9 dist. and ignore the crank sensor.wiring for the 4.0 isn't that tough though, lots of good advice on this site if you run into problems.edit:wasn't sure about the ports....go with the 4.0 stuff

no... it wont. wont even bolt up.

i've built lots of both, but never tried to swap parts between them.oh,well.

wow that was quick guys!! Thanks for the advice!! I tried the same question on the serious ex site and got no response. Guess since I wasn't talking bout a v-8 swap they weren't interested. Oh well..about how many hours would it take to convert the harness then. I just need this thing back up as soon as possible once i start the project. I will have to do it at a friends house and he can get a little pushy about how long things sit around sometimes.

what year is the truck its going into??

never mind, you edited your info. if its an 88, its gonna take a little wiring to make it work. theres lots of info here about what and where. if its a 2nd gen (you had 89 listed as the truck before) then all you need to do is plug in the proper harness and it all works.

yeah I just set my account up and was editting the info when everyone was replying. I have both an 88 and a 89. The 88 is the DD as well as the Ranger. The 89 will be my toy with a possible v-8,chopped top, removable doors, solid axle swap, and who knows what else. Just need to get the 88 more road worthy for now. Glad to hear the 89 is basically plug and play though. It may wind up with a 4.0 too. Guess I just have to bight the bullet and do the harness thing on the 88. I know there are a bunch of posts on it so it should make it easier i guess. i don't mind wiring things up as long as I have a good sense of what is required ya know?

my curiosity is right up now. on monday i'm heading down to the boneyard,so i'll pull the intakes off both motors and get pics of the differences.'fraid it'll have to wait till then tho-unless anyone else has the parts hanging around:icon_confused:

I knew the two engines were related and even for the most part share the same block but had never heard of any mods like what I mentioned. I assumed it was because of the benifits of gowing with the MAF and the like. That in itself got my curiosity up about it too. If it would work it would give you the bigger engine with the benefit of basically being a direct replacement.

ok,as promised...it's monday.so heres the deal-while the ports generally line up,the water passages don't come even close.but there is an even bigger problem-the 4.0 has a taller deck than the 2.9 so the intake for the 4.0 is much wider, similar to what you find between a 302 and 351w;they are based on the same basic block design so things look like they should work don't when it comes to actually putting parts together.:icon_cheers:

Well that puts a definate end to that possibility!! Thanks for your time in researching what the differences are anyhow!! I'm like you, my curiousity has been up on this idea for quite a while. I know I hadn't seen or heard of anyone doing this but I thought it might be because of the benifits of just going all the way with the swap. I tend to think of some of the wierdest ideas sometimes and when it comes to engine swaps my mind goes crazy with ideas of ways to make things work. These newer computer controls have put a big damper on my creativity though. I guess as long as you have the donor vehicle you could pretty much make anything work as long as feel like swapping the harness. I will just have to do the complete swap I guess. Good thing this particular swap doesn't involve the whole harness.

happy to help.sorry my first post was off base, but i'm happy to get to the full set of facts.nothing tells the story like actually putting the parts side by side.

umm just because the 2.9L is ticking doesnt mean its going to explode..

EVERY...and i mean EVERY 2.9L iv driven ticked...my last one sounded like a diesel it was so bad...

ironically my ranger ticks too (4L) it also sounds like a diesel...

i wouldnt get a worried about it!

The 2.9 has been run really hot in the past and even warped the heads. I wound up taking the heads off my 89 and putting them on the 88(the body is really bad on the 89 by the way)just to get it back up and running. Now with over 20,000 miles since then it WILL NOT travel down the road at anything over 45 miles per hour without the whole top end rattling. Also the oil pressure drops to about 12 psi after warmup at an idle. I am going to need this thing to make trips farther than just around town in just the next couple of months and by October for shure, going to Pa. and might need the 4x4. It also has a slight bottom end knock at about 3000 rpm so yes it's time to swap it.
