ok guys, i have a 2001 ranger 2wd 3.0 litre w/front abs. the problem i'm having is when i checked the front brakes i found that the front pads were about 1'' taller than the rotor causing the pads to have a deep wear groove in them and the 1'' of the top of the pad being above the rotor. is this normal wear or should the pad wear evenly from the top to the bottom.i have never seen this before,is this something that i should be worried about?

That sounds like a problem.

The pads should ride evenly along the width of the rotor braking surface. There should not be any portion of the pad that is not over the rotor. Almost sounds like someone put the wrong sized rotors on your truck.

I would be worried about that.

You have part of the pad not even touching the rotor? Past the outer edge of the rotor?

You have the wrong rotors on the truck. I found most places list the smaller rotors for the 01. They're the wrong diameter. Replace the pads and rotors right away with the right parts. (both use the same pads.)

Yeah, the only time I can think of that I have ever seen anything even close to this was when I lost a wheel back in January and ground part of my rotor off while I skidded down the road.

That was an odd sensation from the brakes driving home to fix it.

I can't even see how that would happen since the caliper is above the brake pads and there are pad slots in the caliper bracket.

I bet one of the two sets of caliper bolts has broken or come off, and the caliper is riding up on one end.

If the rotors are too small of a diameter it will happen.
