Why is nobody open to new things.

i just like precision, and quality.

i wouldnt spend 800 on a plastic laptop when i can spend 1300 and get a CNC machined laptop with the tolorences of a hair. mac is my rolls royce. windows computers just dont have the R&D in them. their customer service to anybody that doesnt mod or build them sucks. my moms gateway laptop cooked 3 hard drives, a power port and a block of ram, and she didnt have it for a month each time. she used it to email and type work up.

the ideas windows uses are just out dated. unfortunatly the world is progressing, and these windows based computers are the same they were 10 years ago, with some added speed and memory.

windows is worse then ford when it come to updating the look of their products. (same ranger since 97)

for instance. use a metal case as a heat sink. use a magnetic power cord cus lord knows its gonna get pulled out by accident. put in an anitglare screen with true 1080P. have drop protection so when the macbook feels its falling, it turns off the harddrive to protect from damage. make the touch pad the clicker, instead of adding unnesisary buttons.

i could go on for a week.

That's what you get when you spend $1500 on a laptop. You cant tell me you cant buy a $1500 dollar windows based laptop without that stuff, because you can. Its called a toughbook.

The reason you get that stuff is because you payed for it and they don't make their laptops without it.

As for design change, the basic deign of a macbook hasn't changed, all they have changed is from plastic to aluminum. Microsoft does not decide the design of laptops of desktops, they only sell their software to companys (Dell, HP, ASUS, Sony), so they can load it on their own products. Microsoft only makes software where as apple makes software and hardware.

Like others stated, I like to use my laptop for gaming. A macbook pro will unlikely ever be comparable to my plastic alienware.

sometimes new things end up kinky and painfully.. just sayin...

We have 1 laptop and 1 desktop running XP and 1 laptop running Vista (which I don't care for much). The newest laptop was $298 on special at Wallyworld. The older laptop I bought for $112 used on Ebay, and the desktop cost me $15 for a used hard drive and a little time to install XP and my other programs I use. They all do what I ask of them including some video file converting and editing, digitizing old records and cleaning up the audio, general internet use etc. I just use Ccleaner to keep junk from building up and to keep the registry clean. I also uninstall any programs that I never plan to use. They all still seem to run just as fast as they always have. Although the desktop could stand an upgrade from 512 mb RAM, I just haven't got around to that yet. Why would I spend a fortune on a Mac just to do the same things I already do just fine now when I am already comfortable with what I have and very rarely have any problems. IF IT AIN'T BROKE, IT DOESN'T NEED FIXED in my opinion.

The entire computer market has been built on a simple concept...humans are greedy and they want to have it all yesterday and it has to be the biggest, best, fastest, and, for some, the most expensive or offbeat...

But half the problem is the actual software that is being produced drives the need for bigger and better...the more complex the software, the more resource intense...thus driving us...

As far as who has the fastest and the bestest machine...it's a marketing game...we're talking nanosecond differences sometimes and they make a big deal out of how much better the product is because of said nanosecond...

I think that's partially why I tuned out of the competition years ago...it's just marketing...

i use a beater pentium 2 compaq laptop ive dubbed "Frankenstien" or "craptop" i got for free in the junkyard section of the old computer repair store i worked for years ago, i pulled it out just for its serial port to run a device on(BIOS EPROM reader i made) and decided to keep using it, couple years later, its still running strong and its playing Divx movies, CAD work, wifi browsing and still has 6 hours batterylife. the lcd lid and chassis are actually metal, i can tell cause paints been chipping off leaving exposed metal. I also have a 1989 compaq deskpro 386 that runs DOS and windows 95 that can do basic needs like light web browsing, running office 95, and IRC, and this thing was built in the 80's!!!!1! and still works like new. to say pc hardware is inferior means you dont know how to build your own pc with good parts or do your own repairs or know what software bloat is and how to avoid it. i'll admit, macs have higher quality components than most major brand PC manufacturers, but they have lots of over designed crap, like slot load cd drives that break for example. i'll be the first to admit major brands like HP, DELL, gateway, sony use cheap-ass components on some there parts, come with operating systems pre-bloaded with trial crap, etc. Build your own pc with good parts and dont install crapware and you'll never complain.. hell even buy a used PC and change a few parts out and stick a fresh copy of windows on it, still much better than buying a new namebrand one IMO.

I'd love to try a Mac. The only reason why I can't is because of price. If they were about the same price, the laptop I'm currently typing this message on would probably be a Mac. What I think they should do is sell the OS, there is a huge community that's all about running Mac OSX on non Apple computers. That would probably be more affordable for people to run the OS. Or license other companies to build computers that run OSX from the factory.

I don't like Macs for a few reasons.

I, like Jay, like to build my computers and use them for gaming. I also like to be able to repair my units, on my own. And they are so darn expensive.

Mac makes a good system, and they have a great OS. It's very stable for the exact reason that Windows is generally considered "unstable". You can't screw with stuff in Mac OS like you can in Windows. And the stuff you can screw with in Windows is what makes it go wonky.

Windows is the target of viruses because it is widely used. Mac OS is not immune to viruses, people just don't bother to write them for it because there aren't enough users.

I like to tease my mom and sister with my Dell. They have both had weeks of down time on their Mac laptops due to bad CD drives, because you have to send it out to get the drive replaced. I can pop mine out in about 30 seconds if I take my time.

End of the story, Mac makes a good product but they don't compete on price, they expect people will pay 3x more for it just because it has slightly better quality, and they function mostly in a niche market. I'd probably get one, but they don't do what I want.

Oh, and regularly maintaining your PC will keep it from slowing down. Clear your cookies, clean your hard drive, restart it, and defrag the drive every so often. It will keep it's speed.

Pretty much tells my story. i build my own rigs, love the ability to tweak thinks to my liking.
One of my reasons i love my ranger lots of cheap parts and easy to customize.
I would most away from windows if i could get my software and games to run on linux reliable

Trojan and virus writers are starting to target MAC users because it has been noticed that MAc users are more affluent than average (thus more lucrative targets)

When people writing virii and trojans were just doing it for the mischief factor macs weren't
worth going after but when people started doing it for theft and profit the game changed...

yea, but as soon as that happens, mac will have something up their sleve. also, 99% or people dont build their computers. nobody in my family has, and only one friend does. i can buy a powerful mac that will run anything. i dont need to build something that has liquid cooling.

That'd be great if we could keep our beer cold at the same time...

oooops

The newest gadget will be cold beer on tap right from your computer...the plumbing may be a bit tricky...if you run out of beer...your computer overheats and freezes...at about the time you belch out your best post....

:icon_rofl:

Old people don't like change, things get too complicated. Indoor plumbing was a good idea though.
Obviously you have not visited an Apple store lately. You would be SHOCKED to see how many older people are in there buying and learning how to use their new Mac's.

I asked an older gent a couple months back why he bought a new Mac even though he somewhat knew how to operate a PC to do what he needed. His plain and simple response, "Because I won't have to spend the money to buy a new Mac in 2 years."

I am running on a 2009 MacBook Pro with OS X Loin. It runs faster than my brand new Dell Latitude that I just got for my part-time job ever thought about running. My wife is running a 2009 Compaq laptop that is getting replaced next year because it would cost more to upgrade it than to buy a new one.

The only thing I have done to my MacBook Pro is upgrade the RAM and put in a SSD hard drive. I haven't had to re-install the OS other than to put in the new hard drive (I just put the hard drive in about 6 months ago). Before the new hard drive, I hadn't once reinstalled the OS to make the machine run faster. The machine hadn't slowed down 1 bit since it was new.

Yea a Mac computer is pricy. Think about it though. How much money do you waste upgrading parts (physical cost), reinstalling the OS (labor cost), upgrading OS to whatever comes out next year (physical cost), etc; and next year, you will buy/build a new PC to start the process all over again. I would almost guarantee that you could buy a brand new Mac or MacBook for what the end result is.

For instance, the Dell Latitude that I have for my part-time job cost $1,100 new. It will have to be replaced in about 1-2 years. I could have bought a new MacBook Pro for about $1,400 and be using it still in 2-4 years. The small amount of extra money seems like a no brainer. The only reason I am not running a MacBook for my part-time job is because the company won't buy the Mac version of the software that we run for just one computer (AutoCAD, Office, etc.; roughly $7,000 worth of software). If we were upgrading multiple computers at 1 time, I guarantee they would have been Mac's.

I would rather spend the extra money up front than to have to spend the money as I go. My labor is worth something, even if I am doing it for myself. Time to me is critical. The more time I have free, the more time I spend with my family and put into other money making ventures.

I always ran a Apple computer growing up, until I got into high school. Then it was all PC. Doesn't make sense. Now the high school I graduated from issues EVERY student a MacBook to use for school. Seems ironic.

I am not bashing PC's at all (stating obvious). I am currently running a PC based server for my house.

To get a virus on OS X, you as the user have to install it. It doesn't matter what you download if you don't run/install it. OS X isn't like Windows where it can be programmed to install automatically.

Meh, my PC is still all 2008 era hardware (top of the line at the time, mind you), it will still run any game I can throw at it. I still don't see upgrading for at least another 2 years. My laptop is a cheap HP made around 2005 that I picked up used. It's plenty fast for surfing the internet and tuning my truck. And I'm a person who can't stand slow computers.

how the hell do you have to replace a laptop in 2 years? what went wrong?

The only laptops I see failing after only two years were factory shipped
with harddrives that I would only use to keep a table from wobbling

And OS crash or outright HDD failure is not cause to replace the notebook.

MAC people simply don't acknowledge that they represent 15% of the
market in the US, far less worldwide. and there are reasons for that....

I maintain two harddrives for my notebook, a clone I update monthly.
My desktop that sees far more use I update the clone weekly.
