What?

The explorer up until recently used the same transmission as the Ranger does. Therefore, they are constantly being discussed, but not many of us here actually have explorers...hence why you don't see them discussed specifically.

I have an explorer, and i will be the first to tell you the transmissions suck.

first my clutch went out

a few weeks later my trans quit on me.

:icon_confused: Keep fluid in it... The M50D-R1 is pretty durable as long as you keep fluid in it, let it get low and it gets toasted (literally)... The A4LD, on the other hand, is a piece of trash, and is what I believe he's talking about...

The A4LD is a piece of garbage, but it's a tough piece of garbage! Mine was so low on fluid at one point in time that it would stay in "neutral" while your reving the engine in drive until it kicks in.

Now that the leaks fixed she runs like a top with 150k on her!

I take transmissions on a case by case basis. My mothers windstar's tranny died at 50k. I know a girl who got one (same year) from her grandmother, with 210k on it, that still runs perfect.

When Ford got away from the A4LD and switched to the 4R55E and 5R55E is when the RBV auto transmission starting being reliable. The 5R55E is a strong transmission that will last forever if you do regular maintenance on it.

Sorry to thread jack, but do you know if the 4R55E or 5R55E will bolt up to a 3.0 that has an A4LD?

They will bolt up because they came in the newer 3.0 Rangers. However, the problem is the 4R55E and the 5R55E are more electronic controlled than the A4LD, so your PCM wont be compatible.

Damn.

Oh well. I'll just swap in another A4LD when this one gets around to crapping out on me. They're only about 70 bucks used.

I don't want to hijack the thread but;

Is the automatic box of a 4.0 with 4x4 the same
as the auomatics who were used with a 2.9 V6 in smaller cars
and then without the 4x4?

Best regards
