why do you drive ford?

PT Cruiser

PEEEEE-TEEEEEEEEE LOOOOOOOSER!

Sorry, had to. I do it all day long at work when we have one in the shop.

Those things are almost as nice as the Chevy HrHrHr.

I drive fords because they are great vehicles. For the most part. I love ford, always have and always will.

Only vehicles I've ever owned so far are ford. My ranger and my focus. Want to add an old f150 to the stable as well.

when I was younger I worked in the woods for my brother in law. Chebbys just didn't have the ability to last in the environment. I have owned at least 1 car from the big 3, the ford always came in the best. Did have a 65 Corvair, great little fun car, my brother did it in.
69 Dodge charger really liked it, always working on the ignition system (typical of dodges for years), my brother also did this one in. Anyhow when it comes to trucks Ford IMO are the best. My F250 with 351 ran great took it all over the country, my current F350 6.0 is just a good truck (yes I did BP it), the ranger has 300000+ on it and runs like a top. Gonna get the rear main done and install new clutch while trans is out, next will be to R&R the front end and rear shackles.

Dodge were always fairly primative, chebby looked pretty to some, but if you wanted a car buy a chebby, you want a truck go ford 1st.

I bought the Ranger I presently have because I owned one previously. It has less to do with it being a Ford that it has to do with fitting a need. The 90 Ranger I had did everything I needed it to for over three years with very little in the way of problems. Then I had the 'brilliant' idea that I wanted something different in it's place. I bought a 1983 Chevy El Camino. For the 2+ years I had that, it gave me many problems. Trans went out, carburetor acted up, ECU problems, etc. That plus the fact that El Caminos, Rancheros, etc. don't really serve the role as a 'truck' as well as a Ranger does. Then, the timing chain broke, bending valves and causing a lot of internal damage in the engine. I then bought the Ranger I presently have.

I have to say it's because of the engineering. Every other brand I've worked on I look at it and go "WT* were they thinking? Why would you do that?" whereas with a Ford I can honestly say that most of the things I've seen on them in the 84 - 95 or so range is the way I would have done it. Or at the very least makes some sense.

Oh, Ford has those too. 2.9, 3.0 or 4.0 fan clutch removal come to mind as well as the first generation rear ABS system. There are others. All manufacturers have 'WTFs'.

I work on Fords all day long, and I say that AT LEAST twice a day. Morons, idiots, want to kill those guys, make these idiots come work on their own junk for a few weeks a year and maybe they would put some thought into this design, etc. All things I say about FORD engineers with extreme regularity.

The fan clutches make sense to me. The early ABS systems, those weren't just Ford, they were usually systems bought from Kelsey-Haynes, and used by most manufacturers.

Plenty of "who the hell decided that was a good idea" moments when I'm working on my rides.

Then I worked on my sisters boyfriends Chrysler 300m. And that thing is insanely retarded. I don't feel so bad working on my fords after that POS

I am a big fan of the Supercab F-150s frm about 10 on up. Dash removal, only if it has the rear foot well air ducts, the passenger seat must be removed to get the dash out, because you have to get the floor duct up off the floor to unplug and route a leg of the dash harness going to the RCM past the floor duct. One 12-pin inline connector a foot away could save 45 minutes of work on that job.

Don't get me started on the dipstick location of the 6R-series transmissions. Any time you need to start a "general procedures" instruction page with big bold print that says "Warning, the thing you are going to touch is right next to things that get above 400*, be careful not to burn yourself." you need to go back and re-design.

My current WTF is the oil filter location on the new Dodge diesel, you have to either remove everything from above or go through a hole in the inner fender that is barely big enough for the filter let alone a hand holding the filter.
I read on another forum that the average time for a oil change at a dealer is 2 hours. :icon_confused:

Granted that I 've had the same make and model car for 18 yrs, I've gotten to appreciate my 88 BMW 528e for its wrench-ability. Every car I've owned since has been a lot harder to work on. The Rat has practically no consideration for maintenance. It is very obviously designed to be assembled. Anything easy to service is accidental.

Amazingly, the entire package is a good running little truck. I should be looking for a truck exactly like the Rat except in better shape. The 2 part drive shaft and the fuel injection is just like the 528e Even to its durability. I even don't hate it for the PITA of the slave cylinder, because the action is so smooth. A mechanical linkage wouldn't have enough leverage to work the LUK pressure plate as smoothly. I'm not sweating doing another slave cylinder, the transmission replacement was a breeze compared to the take out. I made provisions , so I wont need the sawzall again. Or the 3 foot fiberglass flexible drill bit. :D

By the time I was getting ready to get my licence, my mom had an aerostar and my brother and dad both had a pinto. My dad also worked at a Ford plant not far from home which pretty much set had set the stage for what brand of vehicles I was going to buy. One other factor was that mom and dad bought a 1978 Chevy Malibu wagon brand new and that car was the biggest piece of junk there was and that is what made me hate GM vehicles.

I never said Ford didn't make some WTFs. (Pinto bumper bolts anybody? Also A4LD input shaft seal.) It just seemed to me that they didn't make as many of them. I could be biased because pretty much everything else I've had the (dis)pleasure of working on was a total POS.

Case in point are GM water pumps, 4 bolts easy to change, BUT you have to change them every 3 years, why don't they add 6 more bolts and make them like Ford water pumps that you change every 10 years, lol.

I do like the GM idea better where you are not taking 3/4 of the bolts that hold the timing cover on to change the water pump. Apparently Ford did too, the Clevelands and Mod motors look a lot more like a GM in that regard than a Windsor. Dodge still does it that way though but they like marching to their own drum anyway.

My Ranger was cheap, 4wd and I liked the color. Powertrain was junk, I won't brag on the 2.8 aside from being very tough to kill for good nor the A4LD. The 2.8's resilience was incredible. Not much power for the amount of gas and oil it consumed though. Especially considering a 4bbl 302 with a 3spd gets the same or better mileage now.

2002 F-150 was cheaper than the GM's (that were already having rust problems in 2005 for the same vintage) and did not match the 2v PI 5.4's 350lb-ft until 2011 (at a higher RPM and only on E85)

Growing up I liked the looks of the 94-01? Dodges, and I like the looks of the newer ones. I can't get over the bass akwards way they like to do things though. Like electric power steering on a Ford is an electric motor on the rack... on a Dodge it is an electric motor on the power steering pump. I can see what it would improve on a Ford, we just ditched an entire system. On the Dodge its still there... just more complicated.

I like the older stuff, I have said it before and I will say it again "working on my Ranger isn't work" Even with a V8 crammed in a V6 hole it is funner/easier to work on than newer stuff. And it keeps getting worse.

Fords idea of a internal clutch slave cylinder? no...not a good idea!
GM also had it right with the one wire alternator. I have converted many of my old fords,Jeeps etc...over to the one wire alt and removed a ton of wiring and the external regulators.
Every manufacturer has their stupid designs, issues, all over the spectrum.
My 96 Dodge ram ( Indy pace truck bought new) has been awesome over the years. only thing changed on it has been the waterpump and the plenum gasket under the intake ( stupid design). The fuel pump and computer reflashed while under warrenty. 148K miles and still going great...with the same transmission! ( just keep maintaince on it as recomended..no problems)
Ford has always been tighter on the build quality. the torque specs on a ford engine are higher than compared to a chevy.
GM cars in the 80 were ...well..crap! everythng fell apart. the "Flagship" corvette would have bolts and screws falling from the dash as you drove down the road.
I love the "IROC" camaro body style ( had 4 of them)...but the interior, and other stuff would fall apart, break...just very poor build quality.
Gotta give props to Chrysler/Dodge...they was the ONLY one to put a V8 in a small truck! the 5.9 (360) in a Dakota.
to wrap my post up.... I like them all. they all have good and bad things.
I grew up with Fords in my family, and there will ALWAYS be a Ford in my driveway.
