Which year Rangers had aluminum hoods

my 2000 does, hinges look identical to the steel 2005. 'cept maybe the ground strap.

They didn't all have the same construction even in a given year. For example, the 01-04 "power dome" hood on the high trim 4.0 sohc trucks were smc/fiberglass but others in that year range were steel or aluminum. But I believe the hinges were all the same.

1998 was the first year to see an aluminum hood.

My 1998 had one. My 2011 does not. The ‘98 was a four banger whereas the 2011 has a V6. The hood profile is also different. So, that may be why one is and the other isn’t.

My 99 has one, I can tell because the paint is coming off. Ok, I could tell anyway, but it's annoying me that the paint is coming off. It's not going to help resell value, but I also doubt its worth a repain to sell.

I wonder which would sell the truck better, factory hood with the paint chipping off, or black fiberglass power dome hood that also parobably needs repaint.

I hood is the easiest part of a car or truck to paint (that and a trunk which a truck doesn't have). Easy to sand, prime and paint. You can even take it off and paint it in a tent.

On the topics of hoods, where could a guy find a small cowl hood for a 99 Ranger these days?

If I were going to paint the hood, I'd need to paint the whole truck. The paint is pretty well shot and painting just the hood would stick out like a sore thumb. At a minumum, the hood, the roof, and the top part of the bed need paint. Hood for the reasons mentioned. Roof due to sun damage. Bed rails because they were sanded down for an over the rail, spray in bedliner that has since failed and mostly peeled off.
