i didn't know what would be the appropriate thread location for this
feel free to move it :D

anyways question?

what winch do you guy's run
what would be the

MINIMUM , RECOMMENDED, OVERKILL strenght of winch ex: 8000lbs

i'm currently looking at the warn m8000 and the vr10000

:icon_cheers:

you can never go wrong w/ old faithful... m8000 gets my vote. i've seen these used/abused multiple times with minimal failure.

the vr line of winches-- is warns china made winches i think, they are not as well maid as the m line... i've seen them fail multiple times already.

if you wanna spend that much on a winch; get the m8000 or a superwinch epi9.0

For the minimum, take your loaded vehicle weight, multiply it by 1.5

Like so: My truck = ~4000lbs geared for a trip

4000 x 1.5 = 6000lb winch bare minimum

I'd never suggest a 6000lb winch though for an 4000lb vehicle however, cuz hill angle, mud coeffecient ect ect all contribute to lowering the effective pulling force the winch can dish out. And the rated line pull is much lower with a few layers of winch line on it...

Long story short. 8k minimum. From there you can decide if a 10k or 12k is worth your use :icon_thumby:

I have had good luck with my SmittyBilt 8k

But there are many other much better brands out there.

however smittybilt.... is awesome for the money!
and 4wheelparts does a $50 no question asked in store warranty on it.
sure SB has their own lifetime warranty but it has to be sent in usually

Def go for the Warn M8000. It will last you the life of the truck and then some!

I run one that is about 18 years old, I've replaced the solenoids once and it keeps on pulling strong!

I would never run anything other than a Warn on my trucks.

can't go wrong with a Warn. my dad has had the same one from the 80s.

I am currently running a early 70's Vintage Warn 8274, 3 original solenoids. Had to replace one that got crushed while pushing a broken full-size off the trail:icon_rofl: and I was only running 31's back then:icon_hornsup:

I think that's what my dad has on his Cj-5. His is the upright looking one with the wicked fast line speed and the ratcheting mechanism on the side. bullet proof winch for sure. I believe Warn still offers that same one...correct me if I am wrong?

Yes they do and they go for around 2 grand now. The 8274 is a beast.

the m8000 is a basic, great, simple, lifelong friend.. i've seen them abused and keep on ticking like nothing. if i can swing the money that's what i'm getting instead of the smittybilt.. depends on money situations.

Dad's got one of those 8274s on the front of his 68/70 F-100. From what I recall it worked great, but aside from just testing it I think I've only seen it used twice in my 26 years.

Has anybody made a receiver mount of one of those winches? I've thought about pulling it off the old truck which has been parked for atleast 4 years, and putting it to use. Don't have a winch bumper though and don't really want one, I could live with a hidden receiver hitch up front though.

that is a HEAVY winch to want to be mobile..
