which winch?

Def go for the Warn M8000. It will last you the life of the truck and then some!

I run one that is about 18 years old, I've replaced the solenoids once and it keeps on pulling strong!

I would never run anything other than a Warn on my trucks.

My buddy just put an M8000 on his Jeep. What a great little unit that thing is!

I agree, Warn winches (and hubs) are top notch!

that is a HEAVY winch to want to be mobile..

Guess that settles it then. I'll just have to leave the winch mounted to the truck and make the truck mobile (If I can talk dad into it). Solid axles, 390 BB, manual transmission, manual transfer case, manual locking hubs, I think it'd make for a better 4 wheeling truck than the 99 Ranger anyway.

Even a regular 8k warn winch with steel cable weighs in at close to 90 pounds iirc... The 8274 is a BEAST. It's gotta weigh in at 115 or more.

Just looked it up:
Maybe it's not that much heavier. Shipping weight on a website shows 110 pounds. But then add the hitch setup. So.... 120 pounds?

the m8000 is a basic, great, simple, lifelong friend.. i've seen them abused and keep on ticking like nothing. if i can swing the money that's what i'm getting instead of the smittybilt.. depends on money situations.

the m8000 is only about 550$ here in canada at zoneoffroad, are smittybuilt t hat much cheaper?

smittybilts run $300 for the basic 8k steel cable... can get the 8k comp edition for like 450 and its got syn line instead of steel cable.

As said, M8 FTW! I have 2 on my truck... they're awesome.

While the smittybilt is cheaper....it is cheaper for a reason. you get what you pay for.

Mine has held up good and is a good winch in itself, but the solenoids are garbage and burn out very often. I've had my winch 2 years and I have gone through 2 solenoids. I will say Smittybilt has good customer service, as each time them sent me a replacement I was charged. Unnecessary hassle you know?

I look back and wish I had a Warn m8000 even though at the time it was more expensive, I feel it would have been worth it to buy quality.

I plan on running the M8000 on a hitch setup. 90lbs isn't that much once you consider how rare it is that you'll move it. I work in a stone quarry for christ sake, 90lbs is easy. Plus there's been times that I've been out with friends and there was literally nothing in front to winch to. Then again, if there's nothing in front then there's probably nothing out back either. :D

I just want to be able to keep it locked up, since my truck with be a driven regularly. And you never know when some asshat is going to slam on their brakes or whip infront of you.
