thinking about changing my whip setup, i like where it is now because its out of the way but its far from ideal and it bounces off the tubes...

where would you cb experts put it?

also whats a recomended whip? ive always ran firestiks but i kind of like the stainless whip i have now

my only problem with that is i dont want a 4 foot whip hanging off the top of the bed and have to deal with it bouncing off tree's all day

Mount it on the drivers side hood channel... This is an old pic... however I have a Wilson 2000 Trucker in that spot now on a custom mount.

The Wilson 2000, however, kicks the firestik's ass.

That setup was a Midland 1001Z Radio + 4ft Firestik Tuneable Tip antenna...
Current setup is a Cobra 29 Radio + Wilson 2000 Trucker antenna.

id rather keep it out back behind me, not too hot on them being in front of me

Just because I'm curious... why?

By putting it behind you and having a short antenna aren't good combinations for getting good signal...

i'd say leave it alone...
best place is middle of the truck usually but that's gonna be really high if so...

don't like the looks of it on the front end and don't like it being in my field of vision.... Hell even cut my stock antanna down

Yea I may play around with a few spots tomorrow, wondering what cutting another foot off the antanna and mounting off the bar right behind the back window

Don't cut your antenna down. The length is specifically designed to be effective on CB frequencies. If you cut it, you'll change the tuning and screw up your SWR.

i think he meant he cut his fm antenna. if you don't like it tinging off your cage may i suggest getting a tennis ball and poking a hole in it and making it so the ball hits your tubes if the antenna works well were you have it?

well, for a trail rig only like yours, i'd just get one of those short rubber cb antenneas with the magnet mount and stick it right on top. short but still more than enough range for trail riding, and it will knock off on low branches rather than break. i ran one on my trail rig and put it in the middle of the hood, back close to the windshield. did fine for a mile or two range (plenty really), never knocked off, and wasn't distracting at all.
just a thought.

I have an 8' fiberglass whip dead center atop the rollbar on my Ranger. It hits things up high, but I've never had a problem because of it (and it's high enough and rigid enough it can't fling around and possibly strike someone standing on the side of the trail). A 4-5' fiberglass antenna (or Firestik, etc.) would work even better there if it's mostly just for trail communication (plenty enough to talk back to camp for example).

Whatever the case though, it definitely has to be out from around all that metal, it needs to be out in the clear to be able to get a signal out effectively.

the stainless whip that is on there now is cut, several feet out of it actually. its was either 96" or 102" dont remember but was deffinantly too long.

really where its at i get pretty good range out of it, a few miles easy. but its always in the way and bounces around on the tubes which is why i put the stainless whip on in the first place the old firestik had wore through the outer covering against the tubes

i guess ill just play with it this weekend and see where it works

or you could just get one of those convertors that allow you to use your regular am/fm antenna for your cb radio. i have one of those that i'm thinking of trying out. it allows you to tune the antenna swr for the cb.
