When Ac compressor kicks on truck almost stalls

2001 Ford Ranger 4.0 When ever my AC compressor kicks on when the truck is idleing the truck almost sounds like it wants to stall. My gas mileage has went from 21 miles per gallon to 12 miles per gallon. When you watch the belt under the hood it almost stops when it engages. Any ideas?
