Got a 4wd 89 B2 with auto hubs. How do I change the wheel bearings?

Same idea, different deal.

You need a different socket, Napa part number SER 2434 I think.

Also, instead of a twin set of bearing nuts there is only one, and it has a retaining chip in it.

DO NOT try to take the nut off without removing the retaining chip. It IS possible, it WILL fracture the nut AND strip the threads off the spindle.

Thanks yall. I'll get to this first thing in the A.M. My B2 sounded like a horse trotting down the road before I found the problem. I believe I caused this by seating my new break pads on.?.

Don't forget to get new wheel seals too. Also, you need 4 wheel bearing.

Doubt your screwed up the bearings by seating new pads. I would check the pads and wheel lugs first.

I check both pads and lug nuts. The clacking noise does go away when I apply pressure to the brakes. I assumption of the wheel bearing being bad, was by jacking it up and moving the wheels back and forth. Let me tell you, there was A LOT of play when I did that.

The bearings do require periodic checking and adjustment. They may not need replaced, although they are cheap enough.

So it has to be the bearing, correct? I thought on the auto locking, I only need one bearing for each side?

NO! Unless you mean one bearing on each side of the rotor. There are 2 bearings per wheel on the front axle.

Sent from the road while ignoring traffic

No, you only need one NUT.

Now please explain to me how, in your mind, the type 4x4 lockout, an item that is outboard of the bearing and only serves to lock the wheel and the axle shaft together, would affect the number or type of wheel bearing. This is a critical thinking exercise, not me trying to to be an ass.

What are you talking about? Basically all I was asking was how many bearings do I need. The part house gave me 1 piece per side. The manual I have says there is an inner and outer, thats why I was asking. I'm not looking for an ASE education just answers.

There's two bearings per side and all 4 bearings are the same part #. Dont over tighten the locknut,( I bent the outer rollor cage on the outside bearing)16 in/lb. of torque wasn't enough to snug up the bearing. So I put the tire on without the hub and tighten the lugs to get more leverage and then tighten the locknut until there's no more side to side movement and the locknut key slips in easy

Also just converted my 89 to manual hubs. And the write up in the tech lib. Says to get the little metal tab out use a magnet. That's a pain. Also it says at bottom you can drive it through. Mine would not drive through I ended up just using a really long thin needle on the side of metal tab. Took like 30 secs. Also sorry for being a little of topic. Just trying to help. Cause I was extremely pissed trying to get that tab out of there

Thanks yall. I knew they guy at the parts house didnt give me enough so i had to go back and get the other two bearings. I got all the bearings, seals, and even bought new rotors. Front end checks out ok now. Maybe in the future ill convert the front end to manual hubs. Sounds like a legit conversion along with rear disc. In the mean time ill just keep it between the ditches. Thanks again.
