i used to have a 96 2.3 that had a top speed of about 143 km/hour. I then upgraded to an 06 3.0 which had a speed limiter at about 150km/hour. I am guessing the top speed on a 3.0 is about 170 km/hr?
How about a 4.0? 220km/hour off the top of my head. I know trucks are made for towing and its dangerous for them to drive fast but still just wondering.

Let me start off by saying that nobody needs to be traveling faster than 75-80mph on public streets, especially in a pickup.

That being said, Top speed depends on a lot more than just engine size/power. Transmission and rear end gear ratio, vehicle weight, and aerodynamics all play a big role.

Since Rangers had varying weights, and a multitude of gear ratios, the theoretical top speed will vary quite a bit. Every Ranger I've ever heard of has a speed limiter between 95-100mph, and there are very good reasons for that. Ranger have terrible aerodynamics, and things like tires and bearings aren't rated to safely carry the vehicle at speeds like that.
Not to mention, the fact that speeds like that are incredibly dangerous to reach on public streets.

This is the part where I repeat that nobody should be driving fast enough to hit the factory speed limiter on public roads. If you're going to take a Ranger into triple digit mph speeds, do it on a track with the proper safety gear, aerodynamics, and tires etc.

Cant remember exact speed but my 94 with 4.0, 3.08 rear end with 235-65-15 tires got up to around 100 a couple of times. Had to run it in 4th due to the high gearing to get there. Really not geared for high speed but did handle it ok. Cruise with it around 75-80 when on interstate. The tires BTW are larger than whatever the OEM 14's were and they improved the handling quite a bit.

My 93 2.3l - 235/75/r15 -4.10's with usually top out at 70-75 on flat ground.

i have an 86 ranger with a 2.3. ive hit roughly 95mph with 235/75/15 tires in 4th gear. i have my winter tires on wich are 195/70/14, i gpsed it at 105 one time, took for ever to get there.. stock 2wd gear ratios and 5 spd..
PS- i do not condone unsafe driving where other lives are at risk, this was done late at night on an empty wide open interstate...

typically the speed limiter on the Gen1 and Gen2 trucks is usually set to 112-115mph

Never hit speed limiter in my BII...if it had one.

I just recently drove it out west...the speed limit was 80mph. I had a hard time keeping up with other vehicles.

Whats the top speed on the 2.3, 3.0 and 4.0?

Not real sure about them motors you asked about but my 2.9v6 5speed 1987 4x4 would Probably hit around 130 or 140 mph.... falling from 10,000 feet or so if shoved from a airplane before stopping abruptly.

I once had my old 87 Ranger 2.9 speedo needle between 85 and the trip reset. Not sure how fast it would have gone, because I slowed down when a statie pulled up next to me and stayed there.

I don't concern myself much about top speed in the Ranger. I'm sure it's slower than the other three vehicles we own (and sadly, that includes the Kia......)

my 1999 4.0 ohv ranger hits 97 and limits there. gets there pretty fairly quick though, and there is definitely more in the belly.

95 on the 4.0 SOHC.

My 95 4.0 OHV limits at around 170 km/h... Honestly though, on most of the two lanes around here, I can only have 140-150km/h... I would like to re-set the limiter to 130km/h for daily use... And raise it to 200km/h for when I'm playing...

And my old 88 2.0 could hit 160km/h(resting solidly on the trip reset), but it took forever to hit 5100RPM in 4th...
