Whats the beef with step sides

Again. Most Rangers are 2 wheel drive till 4x4 is engaged so in essence you are driving a 2 wheel drive 99% of the time.

And most of the time airplanes are sitting on the ground vs flying, so do they really need wings? :icon_bounceblue:

But you are right, for a dd 4x4 isn't used all that often really, and could usually be avoided. Several years ago, nobody had 4x4 and life still went on. My grandfather farmed his whole life and didn't get a 4x4 until '99, and it was a $500 S-10 to check his cattle and fence with. His 2wd 1970 Dodge was still his main farm truck until after he retired in '03. But he had to weigh it down and chain it up to get to town in the winter, whereas someone with a 4x4 just locks it in and goes. They were pretty self supporting though so it wasn't a big deal.

That said I woudn't trade either of my 4x4's for a 2wd.

BTW ALL Rangers are 2wd until they are put in 4x4.

I wouldn't trade mine for a 2 wheel drive either.

I actually use 4wd everyday.......... not during the summer generally but I'd say 150 days out of the year 4wd is neccessary, and I'd say the number of times my boss uses it is greater (low range.... mostly for towing)

My grandpa got to live to see 4wds go mainstream, and he swore it was the greatest invention God and Henry Ford every came up with.... would never own another 2wd for any reason (at that point he was well into his 70's)

My boss is 85......... I asked him one day about 4wd, he said you know we didn't know what we were missing back then, but looking back it was hell having to abuse a 2wd truck or just having to get the tractor.
(this man actually broke ground on his farm with a mule team...... I trust his expert judgement when it comes to life sucking pr-WW2)

2wd's are ok....... i own a few, cars are ok to, but I won't be buying another 2wd truck again (i have seen the light) and one day I may get a car for the lil woman......... maybe

Now that's like saying that just because my grandpa's 43 New Yorker doesn't make it out onto the road but once or twice every two years that it doesn't need wheels.

A truck will drive without 4x4. I don't see a plane flying too terribly far without wings.

Alaskans and or pilots please feel free to chime in on that one.

And another thing:

My 78 Nova was just as capable in snow as my ranger is, as long as it didn't get plowed in. That was a ground clearance issue, usually solvable by enough rocking and persistence.

If that remark was towards my muddy 2wd Ranger picture, may I be so kind as to point out that I took that picture AFTER I had my Ranger in Wellsville. There was also another guy with a 2wd Ranger that went with the group at the time.

Of course, there was a member who shall remain nameless who took his wife's 4x4 Ranger into there with us.:icon_rofl:

And JohnnyO did doughnuts with his brand new (at the time) Sport Trac (I have the picture to prove it).

And Will experienced another flop...

Is that the wellsville between dover and dillsburg?

I was disappointed when the stepsides went to the formed fender type. I have `55, `65, and `79 F100 stepside trucks. The `79 has a slightly different and larger box but all 3 share same fenders. They have good looking body lines and really neat old trucks. I had an `80 stepside 4X4 that I really liked too. When the new generation of stepsides arrived, its was hard to stomach the looks with the corral of trucks I have grown up with.

East Liverpool/Yellow Creek area, just over the border from PA into Ohio and just above the WV panhandle.

ok, wrong wellsville.
TRS used to have an organized ride there once a year but now most of the place is closed down, unfortunately.

I wish TRS would organize more events........ ive only met like 5 members in person.

btw: I love step-side rangers..... i have one, wish I had 3.
I'm going to build a step side bronco to sattisty my step-side lust.

Step sides can look good, it all depends on the general looks of the truck.
However i would not choose one over a fleetside if i had the choice. Also that being said, people all have different tastes and needs, it all really comes down to what you like individually.

The newer ones equipped with 4x4 auto are actually a cheap imitation of awd and send power to all wheels accordingly regardless of weather conditions.
I drive both 2wd trucks and 4x4's My 2wd muds better than my 4x4 generally speaking.

I think part of the problem is the general lack of places to host a wheeling trip at.

turkey bay would be perfect, we have a lot of trs guys and members of other forums that get together for it.

I'd be willing to drive a few hundred miles for a good event with good people.
