- I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
I'd like to see that motor you got from the Lincoln LS in that ranger !! (4.0L V8), but I'll take that as a typeout4405's were available in mid 90's explorer (96+) as some models, like the limited and eddie baurer, had V6 AWD units...I actually have a 4405 and a 4404 (AWD cases for V6 and V8) You will need the GEM, located right behind the radio in the dash on the left side, and the driveshaft...

The genII explorers were not v6 AWD. They were A4WD (auto 4wd or Torque-on-Demand). They used the 4405. It was controlled by the GEM and the TOD relay. A 4405, GEM, and driveshaft will not get you AWD. If you add the TOD relay and the wiring to that list, then you will have A4WD. It will engage 4WD when it feels slip, and disengage when the slip is gone.
Here's where it get fishy: (v6 "4x4s" only, 2wds were available all years.)
The 95-96 had 2WD, A4WD, or 4 LOW. (no 4 high)
The 97-01 had A4WD, 4WD, or 4 LOW. (no 2wd )
The 4405 was the similar internally for all years. (see below)
The switches were the same for all years.
IIRC, The TOD relay was also the same.
The difference was in the GEM and the label for the selector switch.
The v8s were true AWD or 2WD.
4405 differences:
95-97 - U-joint front output.
98+ - CV joint front output
sometime around 97+ - no more speedo gear
