a buddy had a ranger i told him it is how eazy it is to go 4wd but he was wanting to know and i kind of do my self what would be needed to go awd

explorer awd t case /gem/controller and front d shaft...

What's a gem/ and what kind of controller would it bolt to stock ranger trans

Is this on a 2wd or 4wd truck? If it's 4wd, then just do what bobbywalter said. If it's 2wd then it's the same swap as a regular 4wd swap except substitute those awd parts listed above.

The GEM is what controlls your 4wd selector switch (in 95+ rangers/explorers) as well as a variety of other functions in the vehicle, its located to the left right behind the radio in the dash. Without changing this, your 4x4 lights in your dash will blink constantly allerting you of a problem with your 4x4 system. The computer as smart as it is does not know you switched the tcase out for an AWD unit, so you have to change the module to let it know what it has

i am also under the mad assumption that this is for a late model truck that is already a 4x4.

if your wanting to convert a sla/tib 2wd ranger to awd, its an involved affair anless its an edge type truck..

correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm under the impression that only the v8 explorers were awd.the t-case from this will not bolt up to the trans on a v6,so unless an engine swap is also in the works it may not be so straight-forward.

also, the gem module is not so much needed for this case as it has no shift functions.

there is an a4wd case that uses computer controls to automatically engage the front shaft when needed, but this is not an awd case.

consider yourself corrected

when i say corrected its in reference to my definition of awd is not the same as the one in the 5.0 trucks.

one of the systems is essentially the same as a typhoon, it is not fresh in my mind, a family member had a new one with issues that i got to figure out due to a useless dealership...

my curiosity was piqued,so i did some research.the typhoon type system is what's in the 5.0 explorers, and this is the only awd explorer(or rbv of any sort)until 2002.

things get muddy on the information 2002 and up...it seems that awd was a universal option, though i can't confirm that at this point.this was also when they dropped the 5.0 for the 4.6,and the sohc was the standard 4.0 v6.auto transmissions were 5 speeds across the board, but i don't know if there were different bolt patterns for the v8 and 6 models at the t-case.

i swapped an '02 sohc v6 into an early ranger before, but i used the whole e.t.t. package,so i never had to pull the case and compare the bolt pattern.

this was basically the drivetrain options till '10,with the change from the 16v 4.6 to the 24v 4.6 the only significant change.

for all i know, there may well be a v6 '02-up awd case that could be used.i cannot, though, confirm this.

The v6 and v8 cases are different bolt patterns as well as different splines...

Let me see if I have this straight. I've got a 2004 Ranger with a 4.0L V8 and BW 1354 transfer case. I want to go to the BW 4405 so that I can run 4 Hi on paved roads. I'd just need the GEM, controller (what/where is this?), and the front drive shaft from a 2004+ Mountaineer etc. with a 4405 transfer case?

I'd like to see that motor you got from the Lincoln LS in that ranger !! (4.0L V8), but I'll take that as a typeout :D 4405's were available in mid 90's explorer (96+) as some models, like the limited and eddie baurer, had V6 AWD units...I actually have a 4405 and a 4404 (AWD cases for V6 and V8) You will need the GEM, located right behind the radio in the dash on the left side, and the driveshaft...

Not sure exactly how ford sets up thier AWD. I know BMW has thier AWD tied into the ABS system with traction control to use the ABS to help modulate power output during wheel slippage. On the BMWs it gets really involved because of the whole drive by wire throttle, Traction Control, ABS alll are seperate systems but come together as a single system for AWD. It is a wiring nightmare, I am sure following true to the German way the BMW is way over engineered and over thought on how the AWD works compared to american vehicles.

The 850 I ran 27 seperate computers for vehicle control and required 2 batteries to operate the system. 26 of the computers acted individually but tied to the 27th to bring the entire system together. Somethign as simple as the steering column control could lead to nightmares to try and trrouble shoot. We had a flood car that had several control units lock us out and in tern lock out the entire system from connecting to the MODIC.

Apparently with the 95-01 Explorers Ford didn't think the 4.0 had the snort to run AWD, I doubt they had a lot of renewed faith in it being able to do so with the much bigger and heavier 02-10 Explorers.

I do think it would be fun to find a std cab shortbox 98+ 4wd truck, and make it AWD with powertrain out of an Explorer.

About the only easy/cheap way I can come up with to get the Explorer/fullsize t-case to mate with a colone V6 (2.8/2.9/4.0) is to track down a 2.8 C5 bellhousing and put on a fullsize 4wd C4... but then you are stuck with a three speed and that kind of depends on what they AWD t-case needs for input to work. You have a dead horse if it needs to know anything about the transmission.

It is not easy to convert a TIB truck like is in your siggy to 4wd. Namely you have to cut out that big crossmember that holds the suspension together and your engine sits in and weld/bolt a 4wd one in.
