Transmission
Automatic
2000 4.0 5 speed extended cab 4wd 130k.

It's been sitting three months
-rocker panel rust and surface rust undercarriage
Said to need replacement in a year (rocker panels)
-valve cover leaking oil
-tires 50 percent
-original clutch said to be strong
-smoked in at one point smell is said to be taken care of
-suggested an undercarriage sand blast
-might need a battery
-dent in quarter panel or fender

... What is it worth or should I move on? How much to get it nice again?

It is a 4.0/5 speed/4wd... So it's a great start. Granted I'd rather have a the 97 with the ttb.

Scrap price is prolly around 350$ . That is where I would start. That truck is only a deal to somebody who either needs the goodies, or has the parts and interest to DIY Compared to anything else in the mini 4x4 pick up universe, 600$ got me a 94 Ranger with a bad clutch.
How nice do you want to make it?

it all depends on your definition of "nice". the valve cover problem, could just be a $7 gasket set, or it could take a new gasket + a valve cover. the dent? might be able to pull it with a suction cup, or get to the backside & beat it back out. i would take care of the oil leak, change all driveline fluids, go ahead with the battery (winter is coming) then come spring id worry about the cosmetic issues. do take a look under the backside at the rear shackles, a common area of concern is the rear spring hangers/shackles. that truck is old enough that it could very well be needing them or be close to it. and if you need one, do all 4, the rest wont be far behind. its easier to pull the bed off to do that job. and you acn flip the bed upside down and clean/undercoat it. check the front core support for rust/rot also. ususally happens along the bottom edge and at the mounting point by the frame. its a great starting point if the price is right, it all depends on your budget and what your expecting out of it. keep in mind what a new one would be, if its just a few little things here & there and you dont mind doing your own work and you plan on keeping it awhile, it may be well worth it. granted i prefer the pre-'98 (ttb) frontend over the '98 & up design.
