I have a 2002 FX4 parts truck. It has the stainless(?) tow hooks, the manual transfer case with the chrome sticks and the torsen rear diff. Are there any other special parts on the truck I should be worried about? Springs or suspension ?? The truck is red with tan interior. Has the 4.0 sohc 5 speed, manual t-case & 4.10s .

It should have the Torson rear differential which is kind of nice. Basically it is the same truck as the later FX4 Level II.

I think they had different seats and a rubber floor too.

All the springs, the shocks, skidplates, and the 5-speed w/manual t-case is special because 01+ M5OD's don't have the spot to put the linkage - minus the FX4 trans, if I remember it right. I can't remember if the early FX4's had the 31 spline rearend or not, I know the LII's all do.

As far as I remember only the LII's had the 31 spline axle. I remember the sales brochure I had once for that truck and it stated the upgraded rear end.

I thought I read that the normal fx4s had the 31 spline, but I could be wrong

There wasn't an FX4 Level II in the begining, it came along later and the FX4 became more or less what the old ORP was; an XLT with shocks, skidplates and stickers.

IIRC 2002 was the first year for the FX4 package on a Ranger, I know it was for the '150's.

The 2002 FX4 does have the 31 spline axles. It is the same thing as the later Level II. The only things I am aware of that changed in 2003 with the Level II is the instruments changed to white (black in 02), the seat inserts changed to blue or red (not the black and white cracked ice inserts that came only on the 02 FX4), the front brake rotors got larger and the glass got thicker to reduce noise. Some of that is true for only the FX4 LII and others were standard for all 2003+ Rangers.

The tan interior was kind of rare in 2002 and may have been the only year it was offered in the Ranger. The suspension of the 02 FX4 is basically the same as the standard 4x4 but did have the stiffest spring rating offered on a 4x4 Ranger. I think you could also get those same springs on a standard 4x4 Ranger. The 02 FX4 came from the factory with Bilstein shocks and unique Alcoa wheels. If the 02 FX4 did not have a factory towing receiver, it should have had a rear tow hook but it was black. I think the 02 FX4 also had a darker charcoal interior compared to the medium/dark gray interior of the standard Ranger. The 02 FX4 came standard with a front skid plate as well as some other skid plates underneath. You could get skid plates with the standard 4x4 Ranger but I think the front skid plate on the FX4 was much sturdier. I think the console and little tray under the dash in front of the shifters may have been unique to the 02 FX4 (03 LII?) with twin sticks. The 02 FX4 also had black plastic fender flares that I am pretty sure were unique to it. Along with what you already mentioned, I think that pretty much covers the differences.

I really wish I had a level II. I was looking at one when I was trying to get a truck, but it had to many miles on it.

gw33gp--Think you got it all. It for sure has the 31 spline Torsen diff. It has the large skid plate up front. Has the tow hooks and alcoas. It had a hitch so no hook in back. Has tan cloth interior with tan carpet. I think that was kinda rare. Has the black cluster. The flares are black. Has the two chrome handled shifters with the leather boots. Pretty cool stuff... Thanks Guys!
