What would YOU do first too the 4.0l performance wise!?

If you are going to put a new cam in maybe you do one more thing while you got everything tore apart. Mill your cylinder heads down as much as they can without the valves hitting the pistons. This will raise your compression ratio and give you higher horsepower numbers. Just a thought since there is not a lot to do with these motors. :icon_idea:

HI!...

- electric fan (Crown Vic)
- power pulley (ASP)
- Gears
- Programmer, SCT XCAL-2 (Mike Troyer)
- Cat back (Magnaflow)
- CAI
- EGR mod
- Port TB

The above are my mods. Check out my sig for results. My 4.0L SOHC responded very well to simple bolt-ons. People who say bolt-ons don't work are usually losing....... lol! :yahoo:

Wow, thanks man your the first serious person to respond. Any ways can you give me a link to the sct xcal 2? and what is the egr mod? Thanks

I would also like to know what the egr mod and port TB are. haha

HI!... On the 4.0L SOHC's the EGR tube enters behind the TB housing and protrudes in quite far causing a restriction in airflow. The mod is to cut the tube off flush to keep it from restricting the incoming airflow. I noticed quicker throttle response and bit more power.

On the same 4.0L the TB is made out of plastic, but the lip is quite thick. I simply ported it and tapered a bit to smooth out the airflow transition. I do this quite often on my race engines. Combined with other porting and polishing in the correct spots I have seen nice gains on the dyno, and in 1/4 mile times.

Hey i also want to know if under drive pulley's are worth it. What is a good link?

HI!... IMO they are. I've run under drive pulleys on just about every vehicle I have owned. Never had a issue with any of them. I don't recommend them if you have a big stereo system though. On my 4.0L SOHC I run just the single ASP crank pulley. Not sure about my Ranger due to I have never had it on a dyno, but my F-150 drag truck made 19RWH.P by losing the clutch fan and switching to a electric fan, 7RWH.P with pulleys, and 11RWH.P with a METZIERE electric water pump. A little here, a litter there, it all adds up. :headbang:

Did you tell a difference? Like an increase is notable hp and torque... how bout mpg's???

HI!... Well I noticed a huge difference but I installed a electric fan, crank pulley, CAI, EGR mod, ported TB all at the same time! LOL! Just the pulley your probably not going to feel it in the but dyno. I let the 1/4 mile times tell me if a mod has worked or not. :D

Supersixmotorsports sells some proven cam grinds for our motors. As well as any other info you need. The TB spacer is worthless unless your fully built. The intake and exhaust will provide mild gains, like you wont even be able to tell without a dyno(excpet for throttle response) but if you port and polish the heads and upper and lower intakes, port match everything and basically allow it to flow more air, then the intake exhaust and port job will all work together for some amazing gains. The tuner is the best bang for the buck because as you modify you can retune without paying a shop an arm and a leg. SCT Xcal is one of the best, any of the models. Unless your automatic then you want xcal 2 or 3 because you can adjst shift points in the later model trucks. Vlave springs are a good mod while you got the heads apart, but get the proper springs for the rpms you plan to run. I would plan your cam before buying springs. A supercharger would probly be better for you i you want forced induction. You can find twin screws m90 and m112 on craigslist all over the country for raelly cheap and any machine shop can mill you an adapter plate for mounting to the 4.0l. 3.8mustang.com has a few guys that can cnc mill the plate for you out of aluminum. And believe it or not adding a few ground wires will help 'mildly'.

Ok so first, i greatly appreciate the help you have brought me. Second) i want to know what is a good, reliable website to buy a xcal 2. And how hard and how much does it cost to replace the stock fan with an electric one?
Thanks, Abel

The best place I have found for xcal 2 is from Justin Starkey down in Orlando FL. He used to be an engineer for superchips, and helped design the Xcal. Now he runs another shop and sells Xcal on the side. His shop is VMPTuning.com He can also do the best mail order tunes around. I believe he charges 50 bucks a pop if you wanna run his dyno down tehre for a more specific tune. But dont quote me on the latter pricing. Noone can tune better than this guy though.

Wow, you saved me a lot of searching and i appreciate it! But i am looking thru this site and i am concerned that he doesnt specify rangers. I might give him a call tomorrow but just to be sure. Thanks!!!

He deals mostly with mustangs. v-8's but he has some specialization with v-6's. He owned the Kenny Brown v-6 road racer. And did alot of the engine tuning on it. You will have to be specifics with your engine specs, but he knows SCT inside and out. He's also a vendor on some of the v-6 mustang sites I mentioned. He will respond to emails and quesitons 90% of the time when hes not bombarded with work.
