Transmission
Automatic
Hello,
I have a 94 ford ranger 4x4 4wd 4.0l supercab that currently has a bad 4sdp with OD.
Can anyone tell me what transimissions will fit my truck?

Thanks!

You need an MO5D from a 4.0 Ranger or Explorer.

Since your 94's speedometer cable connects to the transfer case (verify that), you can use a transmission from a much newer truck. That means find a newer wrecked truck and snag its low mileage trans. You should also know that these transmissions use ATF, not gear oil. Don't be surprised to find there is no gasket between the transmission and transfer case. For mine, I made one out of gasket paper and put gasket sealer on both sides, but you can get away just with a bead of RTV.

You should also seal up the shifter rail (rubber) plugs on the new trans because they leak after years. You can replace them with metal plugs instead (just like a freeze plug, only smaller).

Welcome to The Ranger Station! (LOL, finally, one post after joining in 2008!)

What you have now is an A4LD overdrive automatic
only another A4LD from a 4.0 Ranger or explorer is a direct bolt in

What many do is convert to the far more reliable Mazda built 5sp manual which is what the previous post is suggesting.

Actually, I wasn't being anywhere near that clever.....

I completely mis-read his question as in "he has a 4 speed (MANUAL) transmission with 5th gear marked as OD on the shifter knob".

But thanks for throwing him the proper rope!

Would a newer transmission bolt right up?

Would you recomend going with the newer Mazda transmission? If so, whats better about it? If I do go witht a newer trans from a ranger or Mazda 4x4 will it bolt up directly or woul I be making it fit. You mentioned the peeedometer...I will have to check, but if I do have the manual would I route that to the new transmisson or would I need to get an electronic? Also, do any of the transmissions from the 3.0l v6 work with this combo or does it have to be a 4.0l 4x4?

Thanks Guys!

Oh an thanks for the welcome Earl43P. It is a manual 4spd with OD just so there is not confusion.

Its a 5spd, just call it that. It will clear up a lot of confusion. Its not the 70s/80s anymore. Almost everything has overdrive now, you dont need to specify that it has overdrive.

Its a M5OD-R1. Sometimes caleed a M5OD or M5r1.

No, a 3.0l trans wont work. Yes, a newer M5OD will (from a 4.0l).

Ok. I just wanted to be clear because my brothers truck is a 5 speed and they are geared pretty different.

Thanks,

3.0?

So will a 5spd transmission from a 93 4wd 3.0L fit my 4.0 94 4x4?

Thanks. Would do any other transmissions bolt up in case I have trouble finding that one?

Thanks again

A 4.0l or 2.9l trans will bolt up. The 2.9l m5od has a different 1st gear ratio. Any other 2.9l trans will also bolt up, but they are kinda weak. I wouldnt use one.

You can also bolt up an Explorer transmission from a first gen and possibly early second gen 4.0. Those should be a dime a dozen.

Clutch Line

How do I get the clutch line off? It is not like other manuals that I have changed.

What is different about the 3.0 trans? Can it be fit into a 4.0 truck with a little love?
I would imagine that the bell housing bolts might be differnet if the 3.0 and 4.0 are not based off of the same block.
If it is the bellhousing not bolting up to the motor, could the 4.0 bell housing bolt up to the 3.0 trans?
