getting ready to install new R & P, specs call for about 25 lb/in pinion pre load, what kind of torque wrench do you guys use? flex-beam, dial, clicker?
the major tool makers list some models in the 6-50 range, but for over $250.
25 is way at the bottom of the scale on my 20-240 clicker, I wouldn't trust it that close to the low end.

My dads got a Craftsman click-type in-lb wrench that goes down to 25 in lbs. I used that for my 8.8, worked well for me.

I used a crush sleeve eliminator on mine, so I got to really play with it and take it apart as many times as I needed to until I got it just right.

I've heard bicycle shops are a place to get a beam-type inch-lb torque wrench fairly cheaply, never actually checked though (first time for me I was able to borrow one, and since then just gotten a good 'feel' for it by hand).

I used a craftsman clicker for 25 years, then I redid my 4.0l heads and had to do them again after 9 months, found out old reliable wasn't reliable any more, lol, when it was clicking at 60ft/lb it was really 40ft/lb

BUT.....I did find out a way to test these so you can be sure they are accurate at different ft/lb settings.

You need a vise mounted on a solid surface.
And some known weight values, I used free weights, but you can use a bucket and measuring cup, "Pint is a pound the world around", still remember that from grade school :)

8 pints in a gallon, so a gallon of water is 8lbs

Clamp ratchet square in vise so wrench is sideways, so pushing down on the handle would cause a "click" if torque setting is reached
rotate torque wrench so handle is horizontal
Measure from center of ratchet out on handle 12"(1ft)
If handle is too short put a pipe on it to get to 12" or use 6" and twice the weight
Mark the 12" spot
Now set the torque wrench for a weight you want to test(clicker type) say 25ft/lb

Hang 25lbs at the 12" mark(25ft/lbs), you should hear the click.
Now remove the weight and set wrench for 30ft/lb
Hang 25lb weight again, should have no click, slight push down on the handle should cause click.

repeat for whatever torque settings you use the most

I figgured that, clickity click would be a pain while trying to rotate the pinion at a steady rate.
Found an OTC 0-150 inch dial wrench for just over $200, might get that one.
stopped by a bike shop tonight, his was a Spantac (?) 1/4 clicker.
