what the tick!?!

Intake valves don't wear out. I could see a valve hanging open because it messed up during assembly, or from sitting. and got bent.

Pulled it all apart. Lifter is collapsed 6.2 mm. No scoring on the lifter or the cam. It all preped to go back together, just need the parts. Can't convey the frustration. All I can say is that it happening now is about as good as bad can get. Tail end of going through the entire truck including a slammed out color change. The only thing that really matter that have not been gutted and gine through is the front prop shafts, ball joints, and the tranny/t-case (both have been solid). The good is everything is clean and not hard to work on. Fresh oil on my hands cleaning rtv off the intake is about the hardest part. Oh, and another week of my cars being out of the garage...

Spoke with Ford today. They will warranty the parts - I pick them up tomorrow.

1 Lifter, 1 Head gasket, 8 Head bolts (must be replaced). The engine came with a rather nice lower intake gasket that amazingly released from the RTV. The gasket itself if better than anything else I can find and the part that Ford lists is not the same, so I am going to re-use it (was only on the engine for a short time).

FWIW, Ford did tell me I could just put it back together and take it to a dealership, in which case they would cover the parts and labor. Seems like more of a hassle and time, so I declined. They also said any future problems with the engine assembly are covered, parts and labor. I knew the engine came with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty, however I did not think labor was included since I did the install myself.

why wouldnt you have the Ford dealership do the work? That way if anything breaks or leaks its there fault, whereas if you work on it, and it breaks or leaks, your warranty is void. I know this for a fact, i work at a dealership and see this situation every now and then. Where someone has a warranty and tries to fix something to save some money and they end up breaking it and it voids there warranty because they went and did the work themselves.

If it was already in the road that would make sense, but its not. I would need to tow it in, plus with this still being part of the initial install period tbey could very easily come at me and say it was the result of an install process simply because Ford did not do the install - much harder for them to take that position later.

Lifters and head gaskets are pretty trivial repairs. If it were a cam or rod problem then yeah, I would let them deal with it. Also, as I said earlier, time is important. So long as the parts make it in today it will be running tonight or tomorrow at the latest. If I towed it to the dealer, at best it would not have been looked at until next Monday since I would not be able tow it until the weekend.

I am pretty anal when it comes to leaks. I trust my ability and attention to detail more than a mechanics. Your point is well taken that if I screw up it is my problem where it is theirs if they mess up, but I like my chances of me getting it right. I should also add that the Ford dealer that it would get towed to (7 miles vs 30) ruined a transmission on me that only had 23000 miles. Thankfully I still had just over a month left on the warranty so it was swapped out, but confidence in competence is blown. That ordeal cost me a bunch of time and even more frustration.

Well in that situation I wouldn't take it to them either. They would have forever lost my services

good job! You probably saved yourself a lot of pain doing it the way you did.:D

Replaced the lifter today - runs great, sounds great. Feel free to help with the stupid electrical problem that I ended up with :-/

This is playing out like a bad dream.
