Hello, I have a 95 3.0L and it doesn't exactly produce a whole lot of power. What simple things can I do/ upgrade to give her a little more umph. Really looking for a 5HP increase but the more the better. Thanks.

I'd start with making sure the engine is up to par with maintenance. Run some Seafoam through it to decarbonize. Replace the plugs and wires. Check your throttle cable for slack, and do the 'Throttle Cable Mod' if necessary.

Once that's done, if you still want to modify, the most important question is: What's your budget?

A properly installed e-fan conversion will free up some hp, improve fuel economy, and can be done for between $50-$200 depending on what you get and your skill level.

An underrive pulley for the crankshaft will free up some hp, much like the e-fan for about $150 and a couple hours of basic wrenching

Morana v6 racing sells some nice, bolt-on roller rockers that will wake things up too. They're about $400.

The 98+ trucks had improved upper intake manifolds that will flow better and improve tq, but may require some customization on your part to work on your truck. The 98-2000 upper manifolds were aluminum that can be ported. 01+ were the best design out of the box, but cannot be ported since they're plastic. It's best to get the lower intake from the same year as the upper to make sure the size and number of bolts is appropriate.

Headers exist, but their not the best bang for your buck.

Porting/polishing the intake manifolds and cylinder heads is a very nice and inexpensive mod, but requires taking the engine apart and significant time investment on your part.

Underdrive crank pulley and E-fan are a great place to start once basic tune-up stuff is taken care of. Either of the newer intakes would also be a great upgrade. I swapped a composite upper onto my 99' and it's given the best gains in overall driveability due to better mid-range torque.

could you tell us more about that? I have a 2000 3.0, which in an ATX 4x4 ex cab could use more mid range.

thanks for these suggestions, I'm looking to do the same for my '98 3.0... do y'all have any recommendations of models for the e-fan or underdrive crank pulley? thanks!

There are tons of options for e-fans both in the aftermarket and from the Ford parts bin. Plenty of write-ups around here and other Ranger forums that go into detail.

I chose to use a factory e-fan from an 01+ 4 cylinder ranger with AC. It fits the radiator perfectly and I like the OEM quality and fit/finish. I had to trim the fan shroud to avoid hitting the accessories on the deeper v6 engine but it's a pretty simple install. The Taurus e-fan was popular, and I've seen other setups used as well. It just depends on the level of modifying you want to do.
