1990 2.9l 4x4 cant figure out what rear axle mine is 7.5 or 8.8?? i know the 4.0l came standard with the 8.8 but i dont know what the 2.9l 4x4 came with:icon_confused:

there should be an axle code on the drivers door. that will give you what you have in it, Mine is R6 which is L/S 8.8 w/ 3:73 gears. there is an axle code chart in the tech library to look yours up in. there should also be a tag on the axle itself (on one of the differential cover bolts) that should give you some info.

just checked its a 7.5 but theres no sticker in the door jam. guy must of took it out but there was a little tag on the diff cover. anyways i was asking because i bought an axle for 80 bucks off cl and the guy claims its an 8.8 but he took off the little tag and changed the bolts so i think i got screwed. is there anyway to figure out what size it is by maybe taking off the diff cover cause both axles look identical?

If they are identical, you probably got another 7.5. the 8.8 has a larger pumpkin on it and the differential cover is shaped a bit different as well if I recall.

thanks i appreciate the help. now i just need to find an 8.8 for sale:headbang:

All Bronco II's came with the 7.5, and very few came with anything other than a Dana 28.

actually, no.

a very small minority of bronco IIs did get a factory 4.0, and they came with an 8.8 and a 35.

I know this, because I've seen one, and only one.

4.0 d35 an 8.8 i dont believe it

I wouldn't believe that without seeing the VIN... Anyone can make it look factory...

I agree, vin's would be necessary, my 4.0 looks pretty factory, and I'm a rank amateur at this stuff.

I have a 2/90 built B2 that came w the M5OD but still has the 7.5 and a 2.9.

There's a sticky in the B2 section that debunks all the B2 rumors.
